This report focuses on harvests, imports and prices of bluefin tuna in Japan.

Prices

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in August was JPY 1,801/kg, up 7% on that of the previous month but down 8% on that of August 2016. During the first eight months, the average was JPY 1,678/kg, down 10% on that of the same period last year.

Markets

During August, about 619 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 1,115 million at Japan Customs.

These figures are down 12% in volume and 6% in value on those registered during the previous month. Compared with August 2016, imports dropped 7% in volume and grew 1% in value.

During the first eight months of the year, imports reached 4,007 tonnes worth JPY 6,724 million, down 32% in volume and 24% in value on those of the same period in 2016.

The main supplier of Northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientalis) was Mexico with 1,305 tonnes and JPY 2,741 million during the period.

Australia sent 755 tonnes, worth JPY 1,106 million, during the period, and so did New Zeland with 984 tonnes and JPY 1,453 million.
