This report focuses on harvests, imports and prices of bluefin tuna in Japan.

Prices

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in December was JPY 2,165/kg, up 10% on that of November and 25% on that of December 2015. So far this year, the average has been JPY 1,655, down 6% on that of 2015.

Markets

During December, about 605 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 1,310 million at Japan Customs.

These figures are up 29% in volume and 42% in value on those registered during the previous month. Compared with December 2015, imports fell 22% in volume and 2% in value.

During 2016, imports reached 8,187 tonnes, worth JPY 13,551 million, up 27% in volume and 19% in value on those of the previous year.

In the period the main origin of Japanese imports of northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientalis) was Mexico with 4,191 tonnes and JPY 7,291 million, followed by Korea with 808 tonnes and JPY 455 million.

The main supplier of southern bluefin was Australia, with 1,113 tonnes worth JPY 1,517 million.

Frozen

Prices

The average price at Japan Customs for frozen bluefin (HS 030345000 and 030346000) in December was JPY 2.14/kg, up 32% on that of November and 104% on that of December 2015. In the year, the average was JPY 1.42/kg, down 3% on that of 2015.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports reached 254 tonnes of frozen bluefin, worth JPY 544 million at Japanese Customs, down 71% in volume and 62% in value on those of the previous month and down 68% and 34% respectively on those of December 2015.

During the year, imports reached 10,621 tonnes, worth JPY 15,117 million, down 17% in volume and 19% in value on those of the previous year.

In the period, Australia sent 7,885 tonnes of frozen bluefin to Japan, worth JPY 10,558 million.
