This report analyses different aspects of prices, markets, imports and inventories of surimi and derived products in Japan and the US.

Prices

The average CIF price at Customs for Japanese imports of Alaskan Pollock surimi (Theragra chalcograma) in December was JPY 247/kg, down 13% on that of the previous month and down 52% on that of December 2008.

The average price at Customs for itoyorí surimi during the analyzed month was JPY 231/kg, up 2% on that of the previous month and down 16% on that of December 2008.

Markets

Preliminary figures of Japanese Customs show that surimi imports in November totalled about 11,522 tonnes, worth JPY 2,769 million.

These figures are up 1% in volume and down 6% in value on those of the previous month and up 32% in volume and down 23% in value on those of December 2008.

During the year, imports totalled 103,736 tonnes and JPY 27,451 million, down 17% in volume and 50% in value on those of the same period in the previous year.

Imports of pollock (Theragra chalcograma) surimi during the period totaled 55,824 tonnes, down 21% in volume and 50% in value on those of the same period in 2008.

Imports of itoyorí surimi totalled 44,920 tonnes, down 4% in volume and 45% in value on those imported during the same period in the previous year. Imports of other surimis (Pacific cod) dropped 61% in volume and totalled 2,991 tonnes.

The Alaskan pollock surimi (Theragra chalcograma) came completely from the US and reached 55,683 tonnes. They also received 141 tonnes from Russia. The 46% of itoyorí surimi came from Thailand and the 40% came from India.

Catches

Catch operations of Alaskan pollock (Theragra chalcograma) of season A started in the Bering on 20 January. During the first three days, they caught 5,190 tonnes and in the following week they reported 14,921 tonnes.

Through the date, they have produced 814 tonnes of surimi, out of which 702 were reported in the BSAI.
