New and Revolutionary Patent for Krill Oil Extraction
(CHILE, 11/23/2009)
Tharos, a Chile-based consultancy firm, primarily associated with high-end marine and seafood projects, has developed a new and revolutionary patent for krill oil extraction.
This completely new and innovative method of extraction will revolutionize the oil market, cutting costs dramatically by reducing the need for shipping and infrastructure expenses and therefore helping to protect the environment.
The chemical-free process relates to a processing layout for obtaining krill oil with poly-unsaturated fatty acid DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid) and EPA (EicosaPentaenoic Acid) in the phospholipids fraction, with astaxanthin, and neutral lipids, used for human health applications and a sub-product being a low fat content krill meal.
This invention also discloses a procedure for obtaining a dried complex that contains krill oil in combination with phospholipids linked to DHA and EPA, proteins and astaxanthin for the use on human-health human applications.
"The patenting process has ended and the PCT application has concluded satisfactorily. We have been working on this for six years. What makes it different from what's out there is that it's solvent and chemical-free", Mr Dimitri Sclabos, Tharos' General Manager, told FIS.com.
Most of the market leaders in developing pharmaceutical-grade krill oil, apply methods using chemicals in the extraction process, which can leave residues, and therefore be a risk to work with.
Tharos will be the first company to reach the market with a high-quality krill oil that is chemical-free. The company plans is to sell or license the patent to a partner.
The company also owns another krill-based patent for a special nutrient rich krill paste, and currently is awaiting a partner to come forward to develop the product further.
