GC Rieber Oils Certified Sustainable from Friend of the Sea

GC Rieber Oils, one of the world’s largest producers of refined fish oils, has become the first fish oil refinery to be certified Sustainable from Friend of the Sea.

GC Rieber Oils products, sold to the health food industry, health food manufacturers, feed manufacturers and the chemical industry, will soon be carrying the Friend of the Sea logo.
 
Friend of the Sea announced that the certification is for a range of refined fish oils from GC Rieber Oils. Raw material originates from approved Friend of the Sea Morocco fishery for small pelagic and Morocco supplier Sovapec and Maromega where small pelagics - sardines and mackerel - are not overexploited and are fished by selective purse seine gear.
 
Mr Arne Alnæs, GC Rieber Oils AS CEO said, “Independent sustainability certification is requested by our customers all over the world. Friend of the Sea has distinguished as leading fishmeal and fish oil certification scheme with clear mission and stringent requirements”.
 
All GC Rieber Oils are GMO (genetically modified organism) free. The company has been audited for Social Accountability and is also ISO 9001 (International Organization for Standardization) and Kosher certified.

About Friend of the Sea
 
Friend of the Sea is a non-profit non-governmental organisation for the conservation of the marine habitat by means of market incentives.
 
Friend of the Sea Criteria is the only one in the market which follows the FAO - Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries. In particular, Friend of the Sea Criteria also fulfils Article 30 of the Guidelines, in that it allows certification only of products from fisheries targeting stocks which are not overexploited. Friend of the Sea is the only scheme in the world which can certify, with the same seal of approval, products both farmed and wild-caught.
 
Friend of the Sea was founded in December 2006 by Dr Paolo Bray who is also European Director of the Earth Island Institute’s Dolphin- Safe Project, the precursor of all seafood and fisheries certification scheme.
