Yissum Introduces A Novel Method For Improving Fish Farming
(ISRAEL, 6/5/2012)
The global crisis of the world's fisheries is leading to increased reliance on fish farming. With fish being such an important food source, there is a need to better understand how to increase their reproductive capabilities.
Now, Yissum Research and Development Company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has introduced a novel method for improving fish farming.

The invention, which enables controlling fish reproduction, will increase successful spawning, improve egg quality and prevent early sexual maturation that leads to smaller cultured fish.
The technology was patented by Yissum, which is currently searching for an appropriate partner for the further development and commercialization of the product.
The novel method was invented by Prof. Berta Levavi-Sivan from the Department of Animal Sciences, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Hebrew University and Prof. Chaim Gilon from the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Science of the Hebrew University, who developed analogs and antagonists of a novel reproductive fish hormone, Neurokinin B, that enable manipulation of hormonal activity and reproductive cycles.

Unlike other agents currently in the market, the new agents, which are low cost and easy to manufacture, are expected to enable the control of different stages of fish reproduction, and are appropriate for both sexes in many fish species.
Yaacov Michlin, CEO of Yissum, commented, "The hormone analogs developed by Prof. Levavi-Sivan and Prof. Gilon have far reaching implications for fish farming economics and sustainability."
"While fish consumption is increasing worldwide, wild fisheries are suffering severe depletion, and aquaculture is steadily taking its place. This invention has the potential to propel this industry forward", added Michlin.
