Fishing Sustainably

Byron Fishing Limited, part of the Byron Group, is a fishing company that owns ITQ (individual Transferable Quota) in the Falkland Islands finfish fisheries.
Whilst a relatively small participant in commercial fishing, Byron Fishing has recently purchased additional ITQ to increase its shareholding in an endeavour to construct a well-developed, diverse and efficient fishing business.
The Company is an active member of the Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association.

The fishing species harvested include hake, hoki, blue whiting, Illex squid, kingclip, skates and rays, and rock cod.
Fish harvesting is undertaken in association with its Spanish business partner, Pesquerias Nores Marin SL. Fish products are currently marked through Pesquerias Nores Marin SL.
Since 2006, Byron Fishing has invested in a 3 year exploratory and research fishing programme to assess the commercial viability of establishing a deepwater grenadier fishery.

The Byron Group partners include:
Byron Holdings Limited, which subsequently became the parent company of Byron Marine, and its sister subsidiaries, was incorporated in 1994 to bid for other marine contracts, and to broker joint venture arrangements. The business base of Bryon Holdings while limited is nevertheless diverse. This company offers a range of support services.
Byron McKay Port Services Limited is a 50/50 joint venture company owned equally by Byron Marine Limited and Neil McKay Limited. Byron McKay Port Services was created in 2005 for the specific purpose of bidding for, and holding, a management service contract awarded by the Falkland Islands Government to manage a floating barge berthing and warehouse storage system, known as FIPASS, currently located at the eastern end of Port Stanley.
Pharos Marine Limited was incorporated in 2006 specifically to receive a 14 year vessel supply contract from the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands for the provision of a fisheries patrol and logistics support service.

Sigma Marine was incorporated in 2000 to receive a 42 month fishery patrol vessel contract awarded by the Falkland Islands Government. The vessel Sigma was initially contracted in under a lease purchase arrangement from Norwegian owners.
In late 2003 the vessel was purchased on the strength of securing a further 3-year contract. For the final year of its trading period in the South Atlantic, the vessel was wholly contracted to the Government of South Georgia. In December 2006, Sigma was sold to Norwegian buyers, who reconverted the vessel for seismic profiling operations.

Dorada Marine was incorporated during mid year 1997, specifically to receive a 10-year fishery patrol/fisheries research vessel contract issued by the Falkland Islands Government. A Polish deep sea stern trawler, Dorada was purchased from the New Zealand High Court, and converted by Stark Brothers shipyard in Lyttleton, under supervision of Byron Marine technical staff.
The Dorada during the period 1998-2008, provided the Government of the Falkland Islands with a fisheries patrol and scientific fisheries research platform which included the collection of bathy metric and oceanographic data. Dorada was sold to Danish interests in 2008.
