John West Australia Leads 2017 Sustainability Canned Tuna Ranking

  (AUSTRALIA, 4/20/2017)

Pacifical's  partner John West Australia ranked as #2 out of 10 brands assessed in the latest Greenpeace Canned Tuna Ranking in Australia. The ranking was based on policy and actions against destructive fishing practices, mismanagement, human rights abuses, and wasteful by-catch that kills untargeted species such as sharks, turtles and a range of endangered marine life.

“We are extremely proud to count with John West/Simplot as a trusted and highly influential partner in the Australian market. Their commitment towards tuna sustainability and support to the PNA nations has been exceptional. We applaud John West for their consistent and continuous commitment to source sustainable MSC certified tuna from the PNA countries, all carrying the Pacifical logo, and congratulate them on the well-deserved ranking received this week,” says Henk Brus, Managing Director at Pacifical.

Greenpeace Australia has ranked the major Australian canned tuna brands and supermarkets on their commitment to sustainability and human rights.

"It is always a great honor to take a moment to recognize the role of partners making a bold statement on sustainability and social accountability by sourcing Pacifical free school tuna. Two years ago, John West made a commitment and has delivered without excuses, with today close to 95% of their tuna being MSC certified Pacifical free school caught tuna, fully traceable from sea to shelf. As the 40% market leader, John West has certainly set the bar high in a country known for its high consumption of tuna and one of the most sustainable markets worldwide."

From December 2015, John West has moved its entire range of purse seine caught skipjack tuna to become MSC Certified.

Pacifical's fishing and processing partners catch skipjack and yellowfin in the PNA waters in a sustainable way and meet the high MSC Chain of Custody standard.
