Ocean Grown Abalone (OGA) is an aquaculture company that started with an idea to grow Greenlip abalone where wild abalone abounds.
The participants have been researching, developing and inventing abalone ranching technology for close on 20 years. The OGA idea is now the world’s first commercial abalone ranching business in the pristine waters of FlindersBay, Augusta Western Australia. Ocean Grown Abalone builds its own artificial abalone reefs on its leases in the pristine waters of FlindersBay. OGA purchases juvenile Greenlip Abalone at an average size of 40mm (10grams) from its business partners, 888 Abalone Pty Ltd – a land based abalone hatchery and grow-out facility in Bremer Bay. They are then placed on the artificial abalone reefs OGA has constructed on its leases for further grow-out to an average harvest size of 130mm (350grams). Nature takes care of the rest – nurturing and feeding the abalone until they are ready for harvest. OGA's divers tend the reefs protecting the abalone from predators; monitoring growth and stocking density and; planting new abalone on the reefs each year as mature abalone are harvested. The cycle takes just under 3 years.

Eventually OGA expects to be harvesting around 100 tonnes of this premium product annually from the FlindersBay site. Future sites around Australia have been identified for future expansion of the technology by OGA.

OGA is hoping to replicate the success it has had in FlindersBay, by building an artificial reef near WylieBay in Esperance. For this new venture OGA has teamed up with two wild-caught abalone divers.
Brad Adams, OGA's CEO, said they conducted a number of trials in the leased area, and he believes the enterprise could add great benefit to the region's well established wild-caught industry.
The concrete blocks for the reef have already been constructed and OGA is now awaiting to receive its approval for production.
The company also has plans to take its business to the financial market by September for an ASX listing. Adams hopes to raise AUS 10 million to upgrade its processing facility in order to double production.
