Fish Farm Pods

Hi-Tech Fish Farm

  (UNITED STATES, 8/29/2009)

Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Inc. has created the Oceansphere™. These elegant, self-sustaining and unterhered semi submerged floating pods are a revolution in open ocean aquaculture technology. The Oceansphere™ makes farming fish in the open ocean a practical reality.

The 49 metre wide (162 foot wide) Oceansphere™

The Oceansphere™ is designed to produce large harvests in a very small footprint: twelve Oceanspheres in less than half of a square mile can yield as much as 24,000 tons of seafood. The Oceansphere™ is powered by a patent pending hybrid ocean thermal energy conversion system that does not depend on fossil fuels, so the entire system operates with minimal environmental impact.

The company is pursuing an ocean lease for a farm where they will grow their own brand of Big Eye tuna, King Ahi™ from egg to market size, in Hawaiian waters. Their plan is to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology and as Jacques Cousteau said in 1973, “farm the ocean as we farm the land.”

The large size of the Oceansphere™ offers lower stocking densities so fish can grow in a healthier environment, where food supply is carefully controlled to avoid the contaminant absorption found in wild fish, ensuring a safer end product.

The venture, if realized, will be the largest open ocean fish farm in Hawaii

In addition to this, the Oceansphere™ is able to support a self-sustaining deep water environment nearly ten times larger than any contemporary tethered cage. The massive scale and deep water operation of this technology allows an economically viable and environmentally sustainable method to meet society’s ever-growing demand for seafood. The Oceansphere™ is targeted to be sold to domestic and foreign markets.
