Ongoing gulf seafood testing needed to regain consumer confidence

  (UNITED STATES, 3/18/2011)

The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board is calling for the development of a Gulf Coast–wide testing protocol for seafood. The protocol is one of the steps the LA Seafood Board is championing to regain consumer confidence in the quality of Gulf Seafood since the Deepwater Horizon explosion.

At a meeting of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, the seafood board’s chairman, Harlon Pearce, presented data from the first wave of a consumer survey conducted by Louisiana State University and commissioned by the board.

According to the survey, many people are still concerned about the safety of consuming Gulf seafood. Nearly one-quarter report they have reduced their seafood consumption as a result of the oil spill.

Pearce requested that the task force implement the Gulf Coast testing protocol as a method of ensuring restoration of the fisheries ecosystem, but also the economies of the coastal communities that depend on them.

Lisa Jackson, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and also chair of the restoration task force, lent supportive words to the idea: “We can bring the fisheries back, but if no one will buy the fish, we haven’t helped the economy.”

Since the first fishery closures in the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the BP oil spill, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been conducting seafood testing to ensure the safety of the

product that makes it to market.

The FDA has been training with agency representatives from the Gulf Coast states - from Texas to Florida - on methods that each plans to install in their state laboratories, so that they can continue the process of rigorous seafood testing.

“This is a good foundation for instituting a standard, or a permanent program, that will be monitoring and surveilling product that will not only be coming out of the Gulf, but coming out of our aquaculture base, as well,” said Dr. Richard Dickey, director of FDA’s Gulf Coast Seafood Lab.

“The only way to predict the future is to create it,” said Pearce. “That is what I am looking for from this task force.”
