First Copper River salmon shipment reaches lower 48 states

  (UNITED STATES, 5/19/2011)

Alaska Air Cargo this week delivered the season's first shipment of Copper River salmon to Seattle. The arrival of salmon in the state of Washington marks the beginning of the summer salmon season, which opened on Monday.

The Alaska Airlines plane carried Copper River king and sockeye salmon weighing 24,000 lb from three seafood processors: Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Trident Seafoods and Copper River Seafoods. At least five more Alaska Airlines flights on Tuesday alone flew salmon from Cordova, Alaska, to Anchorage, Alaska, Seattle and to other cities across the country.

Alaska’s seafood industry has a strong relationship with Alaska Airlines: the carrier flew more than 22 million lb of fresh Alaska seafood to the rest of the US and beyond, including nearly 700,000 lb of Copper River salmon, in 2010.

"We're proud to bring this prized, wild Copper River salmon to the Lower 48 [states] and points beyond,"
Alaska Airlines' combi aircraft delivered more than 24,000 pounds of Copper River salmon. Alaska's freighter arrived mid-morning with another 33,000 pounds, followed by shipments on three more flights throughout the day. (Photo: Alaska Air Cargo)
said Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing. "With enhanced food quality procedures and additional flights to support the Alaska seafood industry, we are going the extra mile to deliver fresh seafood throughout the country."

Now that the first shipment of Copper River salmon has arrived in Seattle, top local chefs will be competing for the best salmon recipe in Alaska Air Cargo's "Copper Chef Cook-off." Executive chef and last year's Copper Chef winner Pat Donahue of Anthony's Restaurants will compete against executive chefs from Elliott's Oyster House and SkyCity; the chefs will have 30 minutes to prepare and serve the first Copper River salmon of the season to a panel of judges.

All Copper River salmon shipped via Alaska Air Cargo this season will arrive fresh to stores and restaurants across the US with the help of Alaska Air Cargo employees, who are required to stick to strict seafood quality standards and pass an annual food quality course, the company said.

Seafood processors and shippers adhere to cool-chain standards to provide a temperature-controlled environment that allows for proper food handling, so seafood will move quickly during its flight on Alaska Airlines and keep a stable temperature range from the time it leaves the water through its arrival at stores and restaurants.
