Pharmaq to buy all shares in aquaculture research firm

  (NORWAY, 6/4/2012)

Pharmaq Holding AS has entered into an agreement to purchase all shares in the Norwegian aquaculture research firm Havbruksinstituttet AS. The deal will enable Pharmaq Holding to expand its general product and services portfolio in the area of fish health and to incorporate services on the analysis and detection of pathogens in fish.

Pharmaq Holding currently owns pharmaceutical company Pharmaq, which develops and sells vaccines and related products to the aquaculture industry.

Established in 2000, Havbruksinstituttet AS had a turnover of NOK 15 million (EUR 1.99 million) in 2011. The company offers analytical, consultancy and biological quality assurance services to the aquaculture sector; it is the market leader in Norway in the field of smolt analysis and the second-largest company offering real-time PCR analyses to the aquaculture sector.

"Backing from a sound commercial owner such as Pharmaq Holding will enable us to establish an even stronger platform for future growth," stated Bjørn Guldberg, general manager at Havbruksinstituttet. "A closer working relationship with Pharmaq will strengthen our position in Norway and further help us offer our services in new markets overseas.”

Havbruksinstituttet built a first-class laboratory in Bergen that is certified by the Norwegian accreditation agency Norsk Akkreditering and which conducts real-time PCR analyses to identify pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and micro-parasites.

The company is now concentrating on analytical and laboratory-based services, consultancy and associated activities. Its R&D efforts have led to the accreditations of five new pathogens for real-time PCR analysis.

"Our acquisition of Havbruksinstituttet AS strengthens our collective expertise and presence in the fish health market," said Morten Nordstad, managing director at Pharmaq Holding.

He said the collaboration is expected to contribute towards offering their clients an even better range of services from the combined resources at both firms.

"We believe that both companies will benefit from a mutual collaboration on research and development projects," Nordstad continued. "Havbruksinstituttet AS shall continue as an independent company and further develop its well established client services."

Pharmaq’s main portfolio includes vaccines manufactured at a state-of-the-art production facility in Norway; its administration and research and development activities are based in Oslo. The company has subsidiaries in Chile, the UK, Vietnam and Turkey and its products are marketed in Europe, North and South America and Vietnam.

The firm employs 150 people and had a turnover of NOK 447 million (EUR 59.3 million) in 2011.
