Britain's Love Affair With Fish and Chips Sees 12.3 Million Portions Eaten Every Week

  (UNITED KINGDOM, 4/18/2016)

The nation’s love of fish and chips is alive and well, with a quarter of us naming it as our favourite takeaway, reveals Young's Seafood. A nostalgic 38% say it’s because the dish reminds them of their childhood or of holidays to the seaside.

39% of people agree that a takeaway is their favourite way to treat themselves, even over a night out or a shopping trip. The much-loved meal is actually the most popular takeaway to recreate at home, surprisingly over a quarter now make fish and chips over curries, Chinese and pizza.

19% of the UK eat a portion of fish and chips on a weekly basis. UK Population is 64.6million from 2014 census. 19% of 64.6m is 12,274,000.

This could be explained by the fact that 41% of us say we feel more confident in cooking than we did five years ago, thanks to the continued rise of celebrity chefs and mouth-watering food inspiration on social media. This shift towards cooking at home means fish and chips is becoming more than just a takeaway treat as an impressive one in three people recreate the dish at home in a bid to be healthier.

To make the dish as special and authentic as possible when making it at home, a brave one in five people make their own mushy peas, 14% whip up gravy to dip into, and 4% even attempt a homemade pickled egg.

The authentic taste of the chippy in the comfort of your own home.

Yvonne Adam, Marketing Director for Young’s Seafood, who commissioned the study to celebrate their Chip Shop range said: “It’s great to see that fish and chips is still at the heart of the nation. Whilst it’s clear that we love treating ourselves to a takeaway, recreating the delicious authentic taste of fish and chips at home has never been easier or healthier with the Young’s Chip Shop range. At just 2.3% saturated fat and 243 calories per portion you can enjoy the irresistible and authentic taste of your favourite takeaway at home.”

Whether you like your batter simply crisp, light and bubbly, or with a splash of beer, Young's Seafood has a wide range of succulent, sustainably sourced fish to help you serve up the Nation’s favourite dish at home.

Young’s Seafood isn’t short on options for fish and chip fans with its Chip Shop range – the nation’s favourite brand of battered fish for over 30 years. Made with responsibly sourced fish and unique and great tasting crispy bubbly batter, the range brings home the authentic taste of the fish and chip shop with Extra Large Salt & Vinegar Battered Fillets and Extra Large Beer Battered Fish Fillets. This Easter, Young’s beloved Malcolm the cat will be hitting our television screens once again in the latest Young’s TV advert, which sees him longing for the delicious Chip Shop fish fillets that his family enjoys for dinner.
