Britain's Love Affair With Fish and Chips Sees 12.3 Million Portions Eaten Every Week

The nation’s love of fish and chips is alive and well, with a quarter of us naming it as our favourite takeaway, reveals Young's Seafood. A nostalgic 38% say it’s because the dish reminds them of their childhood or of holidays to the seaside.
39% of people agree that a takeaway is their favourite way to treat themselves, even over a night out or a shopping trip. The much-loved meal is actually the most popular takeaway to recreate at home, surprisingly over a quarter now make fish and chips over curries, Chinese and pizza.
19% of the UK eat a portion of fish and chips on a weekly basis. UK Population is 64.6million from 2014 census. 19% of 64.6m is 12,274,000.
This could be explained by the fact that 41% of us say we feel more confident in cooking than we did five years ago, thanks to the continued rise of celebrity chefs and mouth-watering food inspiration on social media. This shift towards cooking at home means fish and chips is becoming more than just a takeaway treat as an impressive one in three people recreate the dish at home in a bid to be healthier.
To make the dish as special and authentic as possible when making it at home, a brave one in five people make their own mushy peas, 14% whip up gravy to dip into, and 4% even attempt a homemade pickled egg.
