The president of Nueva Pescanova, Jacobo Gonzalez-Robatto, defended the pangasius, fish that has been very controversial lately because of the doubts about the controls that are carried out in the farms where it is cultivated, the majority in Vietnam.

In his speech at a conference on business sustainability organized by the Apd, the executive expressed "The pangasius is a good fish" and added, "The problem is if you feed it badly."

"We are worried that aquaculture will be demonized, but on the other hand, it seems to us that it is something good that consumers be careful about their food," he said.

Nueva Pescanova sells pangasius in small quantities. In the business plans presented by the company and in its annual accounts there is no reference to this fish, or to any kind of business in Vietnam, Vozpoluli informed.

On Pescanova website there are references to the product, described as "a white fish, with a flat flavour and a soft texture, allowing multiple preparations".

The company said the president had referred to the pangasius as good fish because it meets all the requirements of food safety.

The group stressed that all the products it sells "strictly comply with European and international safety and health regulations, being subject to strict controls and inspections," and noted that it is a very secondary product representing less than 0.4% of the company’s billing.

Although in Spain, the first importer in the EU of pangasius, health authorities have warned, following the decision of Carrefour to remove it from their establishments, that the pangasius sold in the country is safe and should not raise a food alarm, while its nutritional value is low.
