Aquaculture production falls in Tabasco
Thursday, September 14, 2017, 00:40 (GMT + 9)
An estimated 20,000 tons of aquaculture products are no longer produced annually in Tabasco due to the contamination of the seas and the reduction of the fishing zone due to oil activities, said Joaquín Madrigal Olán, president of the Federation of Regional Cooperative Societies Gulf of Mexico (Fecogolfo).
This, he said, represents between 40 and 60 per cent of the production that was generally collected, which was estimated at 45 thousand per year.
Tabasco used to rank among the first three places at the national level of aquaculture producers, however, currently it does not appear among the 10.
"Production has dropped a lot, Tabasco used to be among the top three, now we do not appear even among the top 10 places of the national ranking," he said.
“The main cause," said the trade union leader, "is the delay for the opening of the Campeche Sonda, which was closed for exploration work in the area. However, although the Federal Government announced the release of the coast, the action has been postponed.
"We are limited in the space that we have for fishing, we have more than 100 platforms along the coast that reduces our fishing zone. Virtually, the fishing sector is being displaced due to the oil issue, and at least in the area where there no longer workers, it can be allowed to fish," said Madrigal Olán.
It is about 15 thousand square kilometers that have been restricted since 2003 and to date the procedures for their release are not concluded.
"As it is in process, as work in that question is being done, they tell us to wait but there has been nothing so far," he said.
Finally, Madrigal Olán said that the reopening of this stretch will increase aquaculture production in the state, noting that pollution has also contributed to the capture fall.
