The Socialist Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INSOPESCA) is planning to build and launch a post-larvae marine shrimp production laboratory in Caicara de Barcelona, Anzoategui State by mid-2009.
The laboratory will be backed by a VEF 8.9 million (USD 4.1 million) investment, and boast an output capacity of 10 million post-larvae shrimp per month.
This output translates into an annual supply of 400,000kg of wild white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti) for lagoon fisheries, INSOPESCA indicated.
The project’s main goal is to repopulate the lagoons of Unare and Piritu and increase overall output of domestic shrimp, which has plummeted in recent years.
The fall in output is attributed to the phenomena of silting and sedimentation that often affects these bodies of water, and consequently hinders the entry of post-larval shrimp from the sea.
The new laboratory is set to benefit from Cuban advisors in the project's initial stage, El Nacional reports.
