Tuna catches could increase by 80 per cent this year, from 20,000 tonnes of tuna caught in 2015 to 36,000 by the end of this year, according to Production Minister Bruno Giuffra.

"We are creating favourable conditions for the tuna industry, especially for the canning industry to be more competitive, and for the private sector to be able to act without barriers and without complications," he said.

The minister explained that one of these measures is the provision of ports that allow the landing of tuna from foreign vessels, which are required to land a percentage of their quota.

Three landing points have already been established and if the opportunity for tuna fishing that is being identified progresses, the one coming from the external triangle (granted to Peru by The Hague), the private sector would install plants to the south next to this point of fishing, Andina reported.

Giuffra stressed that so far domestic and foreign fishing vessels have captured some 1,000 tonnes of tuna in the external triangle granted by The Hague.

"We have a very good amount of fishing (tuna) at this time, and although this will not always be like this, we are taking advantage of it in a sea that we did not have an opportunity to fish before," he noted.

It is worth mentioning that the third anniversary of the Court of The Hague ruling takes place at the end of this month. The measure granted Peru sovereignty over 50,000 square kilometres of marine territory, and the first results of the fishing in this area are becoming visible.

Minister Giuffra acknowledged the extraordinary work done by Peruvian diplomacy, which is allowing the capture of tuna in the external triangle, with the effort of the private sector.

On the other hand, Giuffra emphasized that they are carrying out the guidelines of the study of the jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas), to identify an ordering for the fishery.

In addition, he stressed that mandatory satellite control for international vessels entering Peruvian waters is one of the measures taken to combat illegal fishing, which "reduces the export capacity of the jumbo flying squid."
