The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) announced the Management Plan that mainly covers the area of Guapacho Bay and Ancud Bay in the community of Ancud, Chiloe province, Los Lagos Region.

The plan -- whose creation process took two years -- worked on 25 resources established by the committee: 9 of them are seaweed; 11 projects involve molluscs; and 4 of them correspond to other species (sea urchin, sea cucumber, piure and picoroco). Eight of these have been prioritized for the first stage, these are: luga roja (Gigartina skottsbergii), luga negra (Sarcothalia crispata), choro zapato, Chilean oyster, clam, pelillo seaweed, huepo, and chicorea del mar (Chondracanthus chamissoi).

The objective of the plan is to obtain the greatest possible socio-economic, educational and quality-of-life benefits for the participants in Ancud Bay benthic fisheries by promoting the recovery, maintenance and exploitation of sustainable natural banks and grasslands and the development of associated productive activities. For them, a prioritized activity in stages was set.

For this first phase, the plan developed by Ancud's benthic resources management committee, made up of representatives of the artisanal private sector and three public sector holders, recommends management measures for the luga negra and the luga roja, which are born from the Committee of Management to the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The presentation of the plan was attended by the regional fisheries and aquaculture director, Juan Gutierrez, and the members of the Ancud Benthic Resource Management Committee.
