Anchovy fishing suspended

The Ministry of Production (Produce) suspended the fishing of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchovy nasus), for five consecutive days as from this Monday, in the maritime coast between 11° 00’ 00” (Huacho) and 12° 29’ 59” (Callao) South latitude.
According to the Report of the Anchovy Fisheries in
the North-Central Region authored by the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (IMARPE), a preliminary landing of 23,469 tonnes of anchovy was registered 13 May 2010 in the north-central region.
The main landing ports were Pisco, Callao and Tambo de Mora.
In additional, the range of sizes of the unloaded fish fluctuated between 7 and 17.5 centimetres in length overall, and a greater presence of juveniles was noted between the 1° 00’ 00” y 12° 59’ 59” South latitude, with percentages of incidence of between 33 per cent and 60 per cent.
Based on this data, IMARPE experts recommended applying preventive protection measures for anchovy juveniles in the aforementioned area.
Produce had authorised the beginning of the first fishing season of anchovy in the area between the far North of Peru’s maritime dominion and 16°’ South latitude as from 13 May.
The Peruvian Government also set forth the Maximum Total Allowable Catch (MTAC) of the resource for the fishmeal and fish oil industry at 2.5 million tonnes.
Anchovy landings totalled 3.85 million tonnes between 1 January and 8 November 2009, 0.7 per cent less than in the same period of last year, when 3.88 million tonnes were unloaded, IMARPE statistics revealed.
In early May, the Ministry prohibited anchovy fishing along the coast of the maritime area between Mollendo (Arequipa) and Ilo (Moquegua). The measure prevailed during five days consecutive, to protect juvenile units in the banned area.
