Project launched to seek fair trade certification for Chilean abalone

The Competitive Improvement Node for Chilean Abalone Productive Management Areas, of the Los Lagos Region, is launched in order to implement an associative marketing model that incorporates product value and integrates a positioning strategy using digital marketing.

Chinquihue Foundation, which is the agency carrying out the project, points out that there is a consensus in the diagnosis of gaps that limit the development of Chilean abalone regional production, which are mainly commercial, associative and logistic in character, among other aspects. These obstacles will be the focus on which this program financed by the Corporation of Promotion to Production (CORFO) will focus its efforts.

The event, to be held today in Puerto Montt, will be attended by numerous artisanal fishermen, sector stakeholders of development and innovation, as well as public institutions and services linked to this artisanal productive sector.



Claudio Perez Barros, general manager of Chinquihue Foundation, and Adolfo Alvial Muñoz, CORFO Regional Manager, is in charge of delivering the opening words and the reference frame of this initiative. Next, the director of the Node, Cristian Vásquez Flores, refers to the scope and objectives of this program.

"This program is the result of the joint work between our Foundation and the artisanal fishermen of the areas of benthic resource management, which thanks to the funding obtained through CORFO, aims to improve the competitiveness of this productive sector and, therefore, the sustainability and life quality in the territories where this activity takes place," explains Pérez Barros.

For his part, Alvial Muñoz emphasizes that this node seeks to overcome the competence and sustainability gaps that have been identified in two groups of artisanal benthic fishermen in the towns of Maullin and Calbuco, with more than 1,000 seamen producers. These producers will have the opportunity to know and implement an associative marketing model that incorporates added value to their product and implements a positioning strategy using digital marketing, a 12-month program that will work deeply with the artisanal fishing sector of the region of Los Lagos.

Among other activities, the Chilean abalone Competitive Improvement Node plans to build an associative model with the beneficiaries and contribute to the positioning of the Chilean abalone resource in new markets, based on defining attributes that allow product differentiation for the different commercial destinations identified. In addition, it will implement business and media plans based on the use of digital marketing.

This project has a horizon of performance of a year and hopes to be a contribution in the approach between artisanal producers of the region and the final consumers of this resource under the policies of fair trade.

The Chilean abalone (Concholepas concholepas) is a gastropod mollusk that inhabits rocky bottoms located between 0 and 50 metres deep. Its distribution covers the entire national territory and its collection, except in management areas, is restricted by capture and biological closures.

In terms of product, its main presentation formats are as frozen and canned products, while its major destination markets are: Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China, the United States, Canada, Mexico and Malaysia.
