From now on, sailing, fishing and nautical tourism in the Upper Gulf of California will be prohibited, according to the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA).

The measure aims to protect ecosystems representative of the region, biodiversity, evolutionary processes, habitat, reproduction, spawning and feeding of marine species having ecological and commercial importance, and especially, endemic or endangered species such as the vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus).

This decision, which will allow conservation of the marine resources of that region, was made public through the Official Gazette of the Federation, through the publication of the Agreement by which these activities are restricted in the polygon, whose geographic points are described in the document, located within the region known as Upper Gulf of California.

The agreement, signed by the Secretariats of Marine (SEMAR), Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMANAT), as well as by the Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR), specifies that only activities aimed at the preservation of the vaquita and authorized by SEMAR will be allowed.

These provisions are mandatory for concession holders, permit holders, production units, captains or fishing associations, drivers or operators, technicians, fishermen, crew members and all persons engaged in sailing, fishing activities and nautical tourism in the indicated restriction area.

For strict compliance with these provisions, accredited personnel of the Ministry of Marine, SAGARPA, SEMANAT and Sectur will implement surveillance programs, within the scope of their respective competencies.
