Special feed for fattening yellowtail kingfish developed

Researchers from the Mariculture and Experimental Biology Program (MARI) of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) attended the National Centre for Aquaculture Development (Cenadad), belonging to the Ministry of Agroindustry of the Nation, to work in the elaboration of balanced extruded feed from a special formulation for the yellowtail kingfish species (Seriola lalandi).

Due to the lack of production of balanced diets for marine fish in Argentina, the Mariculture and Experimental Biology Program (MARI) of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) has been producing its own diets for trials on bream and sole, at laboratory scale and in an artisanal way, since 1997.

These diets have the disadvantage of greatly contaminating the water of the recirculation systems (RAS) upon contact with the liquid medium. Pelletizing and extrusion are methodologies used throughout the world to produce different types of very stable feed, among which there are also diets for marine fish.

Some tests have been performed at INIDEP with extruded diets for sole with the collaboration of private companies, but there is still no local demand to justify its production on a commercial scale.

For these reasons, and in order to continue the fattening phase of the first juvenile yellowtail kingfish born in captivity in the last months at INIDEP, it was necessary to formulate and produce an appropriate diet for both its physical characteristics (stable extruded feed in water for fattening at high density in recirculation systems), as well as for their nutritional characteristics for the mentioned species (specific requirements of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates).

Researchers from the two centres worked together to produce a first production of 100 kg of feed being 3 mm in size.

After conducting a bibliographic survey of commercial products and the scientific publications on nutrition of S. lalandi, INIDEP researchers determined a base formula composed of about 50 per cent protein, 14 per cent lipids and 17 per cent carbohydrates. From this formula, and with ingredients available in the local market, two formulas were defined: one is regular based on fishmeal, and the other one with its partial replacement.

This first trial on yellowtail kingfish in the fattening phase in captivity in the recirculation system will allow an approximation to the times required to reach a certain weight in order to continue to improve the characteristics of the diet that have a direct impact on yields and production costs on a small scale in INIDEP.
