Galicia gets ready to apply new method of toxin control in bivalves

The Xunta de Galicia is getting ready to apply a chemical method in the detection of paralyzing toxins in the marine environment, in order to comply with the European regulations that from this year will replace the current reference method for the detection of this type of toxins.

Such was indicated by the Minister of Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, during a visit to the Galician Technological Institute for the Control of Marine Environment (Intecmar) together with her partner of Economy, Employment and Industry, Francisco Conde.

Quintana said that in the Council of the Xunta, the Galician Government will analyze this week a report in which it explains the scope of the DeMeTox survey after its first eight months of validity. This study is carried out by Intecmar and the Marine Research Centre (CIMA), with an investment of almost EUR 140,000 from the Ministry of the Sea.

The European Commission will replace the reference method for analyzing the paralyzing toxin in bivalve molluscs from this year, so that it will have to be done through a chemical method instead of using the technique applied until the moment. For this reason, and aware of the importance and need to adapt to new European requirements, the Ministry of the Sea is already developing the method and since May it has been working to implement it.

In addition, Quintana said that the results known from the research will serve to refine the application of the chemical method of detection of marine lipophilic toxins currently used in the program of control of biotoxins that is carried out in Galicia a through Vilaxoan Institute.

Rosa Quintana and Francisco Conde praised the work of Intecmar in innovation and research.

"The work of Intecmar is a fundamental piece in this commitment to innovation, not only guaranteeing, through rigorous analysis, the environmental quality and products of the sea that Galicia sells all over the world, and bringing the maximum guarantees for consumers, but also developing a great deal of research in constant collaboration with companies and other knowledge centres," Conde emphasized.

Intecmar has several analytical determinations that have the accreditation granted by the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC). This body endorses Vilaxoan institute's quality management system for conducting physical-chemical, microbiological, pathological and toxicological analyzes in bivalve molluscs and other products from fishing, shellfish catch and aquaculture.

These recognitions place the institute as the first official control centre in Spain that has accredited the new analytical method of lipophilic marine biotoxins using the chemical method and as the first laboratory in Europe to achieve the accreditation of histopathological analyzes of molluscs. Intecmar is a leading centre and reference in Europe in its fields of activity, being especially recognized in the field of marine toxin control.
