The first shipment of genetically modified salmon in Canada is suspected to have ended up on the plates of Quebec consumers, in Montreal, according to three environmental groups.

These NGOs, GMO Vigilance, the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) and the Ecology Action Center, carried out an investigation and found that 4.5 metric tonnes of the genetically modified fillets had been shipped from Panama to Quebec.

Based on federal government import statistics, these environmentalists concluded the GM salmon was produced in Panama by AquaBounty Technologies and sold between April and June of this year.

Thibault Rehn of Vigilance OGM explained it is unclear who ended up purchasing the salmon as most major grocery stores told the group they were not selling the fillets at their seafood counters.

"This GM salmon could be found in institutions, restaurants or on grocery store shelves via processed products, and unfortunately consumers can not know," claimed Rehn.

The environmental groups carrying out the investigation warned that Aquabounty is awaiting a federal assessment of the environmental risks arising from the production of its GM salmon in order to be able to produce it at its facilities in Prince Edward Island.
