Seafood production value in Davao region reached PHP 2.7 billion (USD 54.2 million) after the three-year implementation of the Davao Gulf close season, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported.
BFAR-Davao Regional Director Fatma Idris stated that an 8.5 per cent increase was reached in the period from 2014 to 2016 thanks to the municipal sub-sector boost of 43.5 per cent, informed the newspaper Sun Star.
In this regard, the official pointed out that the data show how successful the region is in the implementation of the closed season for the conservation of small pelagic fishes in Davao Gulf, known for being a major fishing ground in Mindanao.
"There is really better fish catch with the close season. It can be observed that there is a consistent increase in the municipal production within three years," she stressed.
