Direct Seafoods commit a lot of time to sourcing the most sustainable fish (Photo: Direct Seafoods)

A Passion for Fish

  (UNITED KINGDOM, 7/27/2010)

Direct Seafoods is Britain’s largest fresh fish supplier to the catering industry; a national supplier with strong local heritage.

Direct Seafoods commit a lot of time to sourcing the most sustainable fish, whether from MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified wild stocks or from the best fish farms and by working closely with companies developing improvements in the larger aquaculture industry.

The majority of Direct Seafoods' depots are located on the coast and take full advantage of the local auctions

As well as taking responsibility for the fish the company sells, Direct Seafoods has close relationships with the people around the coastline who are running ports and auctions and catching the haul.

Moreover, the company engages with the people who are cooking and eating the fish, that’s why Direct Seafoods supports the Roux Scholarship. Michel and Albert Roux, are not only two of the most revered chefs in the UK but the family have also established a generous scholarship for emerging young chefs. The scholarship is designed to provide an incentive for young chefs and reward them with world-class opportunities.

All Direct Seafoods' fish is fully traceable

The majority of Direct Seafoods depots are located on the coast and take full advantage of the local auctions. Actually being there day-in and day-out, with prior knowledge of landings, Direct Seafoods is able to identify and select the best fish available. The company’s ability to buy around the United Kingdom and abroad, with dedicated buyers in Iceland and the Faroe Islands, ensures that always the best quality is sourced.

Once the fish is sourced, Direct Seafoods' highly skilled fishmongers prepare it to the customer’s specification – saving time and money in the kitchen. Whether you want your fish whole, cleaned, scaled, headed, gutted or filleted, your local Direct Seafoods depot will ensure that it arrives exactly as you ask.

About Seafood Holdings Ltd

Seafood Holdings Ltd was started in 1991 by food entrepreneur Toby Baxendale. He funded his University studies by working in a restaurant that he co-owned. Part of his role as restaurateur was to buy produce from all the London principle wholesale markets. By 1992 the wholesale side of Toby's business was substantial and so the restaurant was sold - Billfields Food Company - commenced trading.

After years of specialising in meat - Toby turned his attention to developing the fish trading side of the business. An opportunity presented itself when a catering fishmonger, decided to sell her business. Seafood Holdings Ltd was set up to buy this business.

In 2002, Toby acquired a London-based fishmonger, giving the business a strong foothold in the capital among premier London hotels and restaurants.

In 2007 and 2008, the growth continued with the addition of new depot locations. More recently, the company has opened a new Direct Seafoods supply depot in Edinburgh.

In late 2009 the company purchased Openshaws a premier supplier of high quality Fish bringing local fish into local businesses.

These coastal depots give Direct Seafoods a truly national presence.
