Sustainability is So Much More Than Just a Fad

  (UNITED KINGDOM, 10/24/2011)

As the UK’s leading independent seafood company, Cumbrian Seafoods is setting the standard for quality seafood

Cumbrian Seafoods business is founded on top quality products that are ethically and responsibly sourced.

The expertise, passion and commitment throughout Cumbrian Seafoods’ business that goes into meeting its daily orders for fresh product is also evident in the quality of the products, now available across all of the major retailers.

Like most success stories, this hasn’t happened overnight and from small beginnings in the north of England, Cumbrian Seafoods has, over the years, grown into a GBP 200 million business.

Without losing touch with the strengths of its local roots, Cumbrian Seafoods now source the best, freshest product globally. This approach has enabled to be successful in supplying the UK’s major supermarket retailers, as well as leading wholesalers and food service companies.

CEO Peter Vasallo

Alongside the quality and value of its products, Cumbrian Seafoods’ passion includes never losing sight of their responsibility to the sea and the fish stocks we all depend upon.

That’s why, long before sustainability was fashionable, Cumbrian Seafoods’ founder and owner Peter Vassallo was flying the flag for worldwide environmental care and vigorously promoting a responsible approach to sourcing.

His endeavours have encouraged the company to become the first supplier in Europe to be certified by the Aquaculture Certification Council.

Cumbrian Seafoods is highly focused on the conservation of marine seafood stocks by promoting:

  • Eco-friendly, line-caught fishing for its selection of mature fish and minimal by-catch.
  • The avoidance of the use of the most heavily depleted species.
  • A catalogue which seeks to utilise the whole fish carcass.
  • Total catch traceability linked to vessels’ catch quotas.

Cumbrian Seafoods also invest in legitimate, sustainable, aquaculture projects. It also recognise and support the principles of the Marine Stewardship Council and the Marine Conservation Society. The company was participant in the formation of the Iceland Eco-Label.

Cumbrian Seafood is a member of the Aquaculture Certification Council and the Global Aquaculture Alliance, as well as the Shellfish Association and Seafish, and is regularly involved in moving the industry’s viewpoint forward.

About Cumbrian Seafoods Ltd

Cumbrian Seafoods was established at Maryport in June 1997 to provide a range of fresh fish, shellfish, coated and added value seafood products to the UK's leading multiple retailers like ASDA, Tesco, Morrisons, etc.

The vision was, and still is, to set the Industry Standard in quality, price and service levels.

The business has grown rapidly and after the formation of Cumbrian Holdings Ltd in April 2001 Grants Smoked Foods, renowned for its award winning, quality salmon products was acquired, followed by Cumberland Cold Storage, now renamed Cumbrian Seafoods (Whitehaven), and then Border Laird, based in Northumberland and for many years at the forefront of shellfish processing.

Outside of the UK, the company has made equity investments in Iceland and the Far East.
