Ahimi, world's first plant-based alternative to raw tuna.

World's First Plant-Based Alternative to Raw Tuna

  (UNITED STATES, 6/20/2018)

Ocean Hugger Foods™ offers healthy, delicious and sustainable plant-based alternatives to your favorite seafood dishes. Created by one of America's top chefs, Certified Master Chef James Corwell

The idea for Ocean Hugger Foods® first started to take shape at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, where James Corwell saw two football-field sized warehouses full of tuna sold in one morning. Chef Corwell -- one of only 60 Certified Master Chefs in the U.S. -- saw the incredible volume of tuna that are sold every single day, and asked: “How can the oceans ever keep up?”

Ahimi® is a healthy, safe, raw Ahi without the tuna. Made from tomatoes and a few simple ingredients, this clean cuisine offers all the taste without harming our oceans.

According to a study published in the journal Nature, 90% of all large predatory fish (like tuna) are already gone, and the rate of fishing isn't slowing down.

 Master Chef James Corwell.

So, Corwell started working on something that could make a difference to the world’s oceans. With it, the first product – Ahimi™, a plant-based alternative to raw tuna, for use in dishes including sashimi, nigiri, poke, tartare and ceviche – was born.

With a taste that even fish eaters will love, Ocean Hugger Foods’ products help chefs offer their diners fantastic and turnkey plant-based options.

Ahimi® is made from tomatoes, but the texture and flavor of the tomato are transformed through a special technique. Ahimi® was designed to be a delicious alternative to ahi tuna with a savory, meaty taste. It’s made from tomato, but its appearance and texture are indistinguishable from raw tuna.

Ocean Hugger Foods™ mission is simple: create delicious, sustainable plant-based alternatives to popular seafood proteins, that delight even the most discerning of palates.

Made from just five natural ingredients, Ahimi is free of mercury, PCBs, and other toxic chemicals. It's also vegan, safe for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people with compromised immune systems.

Ocean Hugger Foods is developing additional plant-based seafood alternatives, in this photo, Sakimi, a carrot-based salmon alternative.

Tomatoes contain high levels of naturally-occurring glutamic acids, which are responsible for the savory flavor of meaty foods. Certified Master Chef James Corwell's proprietary method combines tomatoes with simple, natural ingredients to enhance the natural savory quality of the tomato, making Ahimi a natural seafood experience.

Unami™, an eggplant-based eel alternative will be released in 2018.

Ocean Hugger Foods is developing additional plant-based seafood alternatives for everyone to enjoy. Ocean Hugger Foods™  next two products, Sakimi™, a carrot-based salmon alternative, and Unami™, an eggplant-based eel alternative, will be released in 2018.
