Cermaq achieves high survival rates in Q1, with less antibiotics

  (NORWAY, 5/25/2018)

Seafood firm Cermaq achieved steady sustainability performance in the first quarter this year, measured through key indicators related to health, environment and social aspects in its salmon and trout farming operations, which it deems as evidence of its commitment to contributing to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

The firm’s board points out that the key take away on sustainability performance from the quarter includes survival rates spanning from 92.5 - 97.3  per cent on a 12 month rolling basis, with the highest level achieved for trout in Chile.

In addition, the use of antibiotics by closed cycle was reduced by 70 per cent in Chile compared to the same quarter last year. In Canada, the use was further reduced to 9 gAPI/t for the fish harvested within the quarter. The fish harvested by Cermaq Norway in the quarter did not receive any antibiotics.

Cermaq also indicates in its report that average sea lice levels were within regulatory limits, with the exception of a few sites in Canada where the levels exceeded the regulatory limit and have continued doing so. This is being addressed by all available means, including early harvesting and by treatment with hydrogen peroxide.

On the other hand, Cermaq Chile experienced one escape incident where 6,284 Atlantic salmon averaging a weight 2.9 kg escaped due to a ripped net.

Headquartered in Oslo and fully owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, Cermaq specialises in farming of salmon and trout, with operations in Norway, Chile and Canada.
