Workers at the East Java processing plant of Indonesian seafood supplier Bahari Biru Nusantara race every day to gut, fillet and freeze prized wild-caught fish for the world market.
Company director Hadi Wijaja says they can process 35 tonnes of fish a day, or 5,000 tonnes a year, inside the spacious facilities whose sanitary practices are registered internationally – including in the US, the EU, and Korea, where fish must reach while still fresh enough to be consumed raw.
A proliferation of fishing vessels operating in Chinese waters is interfering with the country’s international telecommunications infrastructure, according to a representative of China’s largest telecoms company.
Trawlers have ruptured or disrupted undersea cables in the East China Sea and the South China Sea Chen Yingyu, a senior official at China Telecom, said at the annual National People’s Congress, where executives from state-owned enterprises frequently summarize their industry’s performance and challenges.
Many of the fishing vessels that have damaged cables are using Automatic Identification Systems equipment on board, but those systems aren’t preventing accidents from happening, Chen said. Chinese fishing firms are buying AIS gear from independent technology companies in Shenzhen, China’s tech capital, but in many cases, those firms haven’t updated their maps, Chen noted.
One of the current challenges of global fish farming is developing plant-based proteins as a feasible substitute for fishmeal in the formulation of aquafeeds. Substitution levels of fishmeal with hydrolyzed soybean meal (HSM) in diets for silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) were evaluated for growth, protein metabolism and antioxidant activity.
The experiment was carried out in a recirculation system of 20 tanks of 250 L. A total of 300 silver catfish juveniles were used to compose five treatments and four replicates per treatment. Levels of soybean hydrolysate (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) were tested in diets (39% protein and 3,500 Kcal) for 60 days. Silver catfish growth was higher at all inclusion levels of HSM when compared to the control diet.
No change was shown for body protein deposition. The production of nitrogenous compounds in the liver and muscle was also unaffected by any of the diets. The diet containing 20% HSM promoted an increase in the amounts of non-protein thiols in the gills and brain. The HSM substitution levels of up to 20% of fishmeal in the diet increases growth and contributes to silver catfish antioxidant activity.

JUNEAU, Alaska - Supplying more than 90 percent of the Pacific halibut and 68 percent of the sablefish harvested in the United States, wild Alaska halibut and sablefish (black cod) harvest seasons open on Friday, March 15, just in time for spring. The two species join in-season Alaska pollock, cod, rockfish and sole to round out Alaska's wide variety of whitefish. Domestically sourced from glacier-fed waters, the unparalleled flavor and exceptional quality of wild, sustainable Alaska whitefish species make them a must-have ingredient for home cooks, foodies and chefs alike.
Alaska halibut offers a delicate, sweet flavor that lends itself well to an array of cooking methods while the rich, velvety texture of Alaska sablefish makes it a luxurious and equally versatile fish. Both varieties are heart-friendly protein options, making for the perfect complement to lighter spring fare. The start of the new season is a timely reminder to 'Ask for Alaska' when dining out or shopping at grocery stores to ensure wild, sustainably sourced seafood.
"Each new harvest season is an opportunity to inspire customers to fall in love with Alaska's wide variety of whitefish offerings, each with its own flavor profile, and always wild and sustainably sourced," said Jeremy Woodrow, communications director, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI).
ST. JOHNS - Could Michigan be the next hot spot for fish farming? It's not impossible. A Florida company is still working to secure financing for the construction of a $30 million eel farm on land in the city's industrial park.
If Aqua Vida Aquaculture's plans for the facility come to fruition, it could entice more fish-farming operations to the region and state, said Keith Lambert, vice president of business attraction at Lansing Economic Development Partnership.
Michigan is potentially a "world-class place" to grow the aquaculture industry using recirculating system technology, according to Aqua Vida's Founder and Managing Partner Kit Munday.
