IN BRIEF - Kader Exports Recalls Frozen Cooked Shrimp Because of Possible Health Risk

Kader Exports, part of Liberty group of companies, with an abundance of caution, is recalling certain consignments of various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp sold in 1lb, 1.5lb., and 2lb. retail bags. The product has been distributed nationwide from late February 2020 to Mid-May 2020 because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product details are as below. The brand names of the products are: AQUA STAR RESERVE/ CENSEA/ FRESH MARKET/ KIRKLAND/ TOPS/ UNISTAR/ WELLSLEY FARMS.

Global Seafood Assurance (GSA) is urging anyone involved in the seafood industry to help it gather data on how workers’ voices are heard by filling in a short online global survey. The exercise is part of the Fishing Vessel Crews Worker Voice project.

The questionnaire asks respondents to explain their understanding of various terms, including fisheries worker voice, grievance mechanisms and procedures, works committees, worker empowerment tools and feedback technology, hotlines, collective organizing, freedom of association, fish worker trade unions, participative management, worker representation, and social dialogue.

With its 53 meters in length and 13 in beam, the Viscount Eza, defined by the Ministry of Fisheries as "one of the most sophisticated fishing and oceanographic research vessels in the world", resumed this Monday from Vigo the mapping of the Galician Atlantic coast . Between now and the end of the month, using the "most advanced technology currently available", it will sweep the seabed and draw up a map that will guide the fleet on the fishing areas and the authorities and the sector on the management of the resources.

Versatile, the map will also make it possible to predict the behavior of the waves and tides.

They were commissioned by Ascon.

This week, a total of five pontoons for the salmon industry arrived in the city of Puerto Montt, in the Los Lagos region, which were transported from China by one of the Cosco Shipping vessels that operate the Asia-South America route.

The pontoons were commissioned by the Ascon company, which will finish implementing them for the production of salmonids in its shipyard located in Chinquihue Km. 12 (Puerto Montt commune).

The Official Gazette of Galicia today collects the Order that regulates the bases and the call for the year 2020 of the aid, in a competitive competition regime, for the temporary stoppage of the activity of shellfish on foot as a result of the outbreak of the COVID-19, co-financed 75% by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund. The deadline for submitting applications is one month from tomorrow.

The Xunta de Galicia explains in the call that in the shellfish sector on foot, the fall in commercialization towards the Horeca channel meant "a significant loss of income for the different groups."

Kim Weidemann joins Intech International as new boss.

In a press release, the Danish company Intech, which manufactures stainless process equipment for the handling, processing and packaging of seafood (including salmon and trout), writes that it has appointed a new CEO.

Kim Weidemann comes from the German automotive industry supplier Klokkerholm Karosseridele, where he was CEO since 2012.

Wellboat company, Intership, has ordered a new vessel and has entered into a long-term contract with Mowi, operating in Eastern Canada. The wellboat will have a total capacity of 2,200m³ and will be delivered during the first quarter of 2022.

The vessel will be built by the Spanish shipyard Zamakona Yards Bilbao, based on a design from Norway’s NSK Ship Design.

The vessel will be equipped with a fully integrated reverse osmosis system and a large production capacity relative to the well volume.

IN BRIEF | Seafood Expo Asia announced cancellation of its 2020 edition

Portland, ME (USA) – 12 August 2020 – The organizers of the annual Seafood Expo Asia, produced by Diversified Communications, announced today that it has become necessary to cancel the November 2020 edition due to ongoing health and safety issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was scheduled to take place on 18-20 November 2020 in Singapore.

Despite some re-opening measures internationally and locally, there are still far too many uncertainties about the impact COVID-19 will have on travel and mass gatherings this November. Consequently, it is impossible to hold an event that would provide an experience the seafood community would find valuable.

‘These seine nets are pure genius, plus there has been heavy fishing all summer,’ said Stefán Egilsson, skipper of Thingeyri seine netter Egill ÍS-77.

He is one of a number of fishermen from the Westfjords region of Iceland who have every reason to be satisfied with the seine nets supplied by Hampiðjan in Ísafjörður, refined by master netmaker and branch manager Snorri Sigurhjartarson.

He has developed the seine net codends to select for size, keeping fish that are 3kg and larger, maximising catch values.
