IN BRIEF - Fishcor CEO's bail appeal in October

NAMIBIA
Thursday, September 24, 2020

A BAIL appeal by suspended National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) chief executive Mike Nghipunya is set to be heard by two judges in the Windhoek High Court next month.

Nghipunya's appeal against deputy chief magistrate Ingrid Unengu's decision to turn down his application to be granted bail was due to be heard by judge Claudia Claasen on Tuesday, but has been rescheduled for a hearing on 15 October before a two-judge bench.

Claasen informed one of Nghipunya's lawyers, Milton Engelbrecht, and deputy prosecutor general Cliff Lutibezi on Tuesday that the court also wanted them to address some questions about the approach followed when Nghipunya applied for bail in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court in June.

The court's questions are about the impact of the decision to bring the bail application based on an affidavit by Nghipunya, instead of oral testimony from him.
