Other Media | fishfarmingexpert: Wind saves fish from feed barge oil spill in Norway

NORWAY
Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Approximately 5,000 litres of diesel have leaked from a feed barge at a salmon farm operated by Norwegian company Nordlaks at Dypingen in Troms.

“The Norwegian Coastal Administration and the local fire service were notified of the incident, and the latter is now leading the operation, which also involves our crews,” said Nordlaks communications manager Lars Fredrik Martinussen in a press release.

“The wind has brought the discharge ashore over a stretch of about one kilometre in the immediate vicinity (east, southeast) of the site. Work is now being done to collect the discharge with the use of absorbents.”

Other Media | EuropaAzul: Ecologists regret the presence of Irish ships on the Basque coast

SPAIN
Friday, August 07, 2020

The ecological group Eguzki regrets once again the presence of pelagic trawlers near the coast. "We have come to count up to seven Irish ships, although the total number of ships is likely to be higher." A sample of its activity could be seen on Sunday afternoon in the port of Ondarroa: a beautiful bloody swordfish with its dorsal fin broken as a result of pelagic nets. "Those networks that swallow everything, be it a commercial, non-commercial or protected species," denounce the ecologists.

Fishing with pelagic nets is prohibited both in Spain and in the waters of the Basque Country by their respective administrations, mainly because they catch and drag everything that gets in their way and generates a lot of discard.

Other Media | SeafoodSource: Japanese government preparing to launch 'Go To Eat' campaign

JAPAN
Thursday, August 06, 2020

From 21 July and running until 8 August, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) has been recruiting organizations and restaurants to participate in the "Go To Eat" campaign. The campaign aims to stimulate demand in the food and beverage industry for a limited time by subsidizing part of the cost of dining out.

Restaurants have been hit hard as customers have refrained from eating out as a way of limiting the spread of COVID-19. After dropping to as low as 10 percent of the previous year’s revenue, many eating establishments have been able to rebound to about 50 percent. However, spacing tables more widely to meet social distancing guidelines has put limits on capacity.

Other Media | The Fish Site: How reliable are aquaculture sustainability certification schemes?

WORLDWIDE
Thursday, August 06, 2020

Researchers are raising concerns over the scope of current sustainability certification schemes in the aquaculture sector – saying that they could be overly focused on environmental and governance indicators.

A recent study published in the journal Global Environmental Change has reviewed the metrics and methodology of eight global sustainability certification schemes for aquaculture: ASC, GLOBAL GAP, Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), BRC Global Standards, International Featured Standards (IFS), Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO), Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), and Friend of the Sea (FOS).

Other Media | BBC News: The islands that want tourists as well as fish

FAROE ISLANDS
Thursday, August 06, 2020

Hundreds of miles from its nearest neighbour, the remote Faroe Islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing has always been a way of life, and fish accounts for 90% of all exported goods. But coronavirus is hitting efforts to increase tourism.

The drive to the village of Glyvrar is nothing less than dramatic.

The road from the airport winds past mountains and fjords, and passes through tunnels cut into hillsides and burrowed under the sea.

Glyvrar is home to the Faroe Islands' largest firm, Bakkafrost - which farms salmon.

Other Media | SalmonBusiness: Firda Seafood on the trout market: 'A perfect storm'

NORWAY
Thursday, August 06, 2020

Earlier this summer, Firda Seafood harvested its last salmon at its facilities in Gulen, Southern Norway. Now the owner Ola Braanaas is purely a trout farmer. It doesn’t seem to be a happy choice for him.

“In January, Russia, the main trout market, was closed. Not long after, the COVID-19 arrived, making the transport to the second-largest trout market, the United States, far more difficult. On top of this comes the reduction with the traffic light scheme,” Braanaas told Bergens Tidende.

Braanaas runs Firda Seafood, a family-owned, fully integrated salmon and trout farming company based on the west coast of Norway.

Other Media | fishfarmingexpert: The risks of re-floating sunken Blumar farm

CHILE
Thursday, August 06, 2020

Plans to re-float a sunken salmon farm lying nearly 1,000 feet below the surface of the sea are being considered by Chilean authorities, which have warned of potential risks in such an operation.

Sixteen cages and 2,900 tonnes of dead salmon are lying on the seabed following the collapse of Blumar’s Caicura farm in heavy seas on June 27.

Alicia Gallardo, director of state aquaculture agency Sernapesca, said Blumar had sent it four proposals for the recovery of the sunken cages and the safe removal of the mass mortality, and that these were being risk assessed.

Other Media | FiskerForum: Deal or no deal?

EUROPEAN UNION
Thursday, August 06, 2020

In a commentary on the current state of negotiations between the European Union and the UK, a spokesman for the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, representing much of the English fishing industry, described the possibility of the UK and EU setting their own autonomous quotas for 2021 as a ‘departure that no sensible party wants.’

‘In view of these huge uncertainties, the UK is already making preparations for stand-alone arrangements for 2021 – in which access for EU fleets to fish in UK waters would be one element within an overall annual agreement. It is worth recalling that in the current EU/Norway annual agreements, without an annual fisheries agreement there is no access to fish in each other waters from 1st January.’
