A not-for-profit fisheries industry group will receive a $50,000 economic recovery grant to help tuna Queensland’s fisheries to rebound from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said Tuna Australia successfully applied for a share of the $500,000 Market Diversification and Resilience Grant Program.
‘Like other economies around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic hit Queensland businesses hard,’ Mark Furner said.

IN BRIEF - Norwegian fishing vessel capsized during mackerel fishing

A fishing boat with four people on board capsized off Syltefjorden in Sunnmøre on Friday morning.

The Idar Ulstein lifeboat and a light boat helped save the fishing boat.

At around 0600 on Friday morning the ship capsized in Syltefjorden in Vanylven municipality. It was the South Norway Main Rescue Center that first reported the incident.

The four on board boarded another ship.

So far it is not clear what was the cause of the rollover.

The wrecked ship has been towed to a shallow area so that it can be rescued later today.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expanding financial assistance due to COVID-19 hardships to producers of several varieties of farmed fish.

After receiving public comments and data, the agency expanded its Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), and is extending the deadline to apply for the program to 11 September.

Farmed species now covered by the CFAP program include catfish, crawfish, largemouth bass and carp sold live as foodfish, hybrid striped bass, red drum, salmon, sturgeon, tilapia, trout, ornamental/tropical fish, and recreational sportfish.

IN BRIEF - Serafin Fishery Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Anchovies in Salmon Dip and Whitefish Dip

Serafin Fishery is recalling its 8-ounce containers of Salmon Dip and Whitefish Dip because they may contain undeclared anchovies, eggs, milk and soy. People who have allergies to anchovies, eggs, milk and soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled Salmon Dip and Whitefish Dips were distributed locally in retail stores.  The product comes in an 8-ounce, clear plastic package marked with lot #729 and lot #807 on the top and with expiration dates of August 12, 2020 and August 24, 2020 on the label.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered during an inspection conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development that the products’ labeling did not list all of the products’ ingredients. Production of the product has been suspended until FDA and the company are certain that the problem has been corrected.


IN BRIEF - Anchovy fishing increased 17.4% and ends tomorrow

Tomorrow the first fishing season 2020 of the anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) resource corresponding to the north-central zone will conclude, when 97.96% of the maximum allowed limit has already been caught.
 
This season began on May 13, with an available quota of 2'413,000 tons, 17.4% higher than the provisions of the similar stage in 2019.
 
The disembarkation to date is 2,363,858 tons, the main unloading ports being: Bayóvar (Piura), Malabrigo, Coishco, Chimbote, Samanco, Supe, Vegueta, Carquín, Chancay, Callao and Tambo de Mora.
 
According to RM 263-2020- PRODUCE, the resource must be downloaded within 24 hours after the end of the season. Processing must be done within 48 hours of completion.

It will take place on odd-numbered years beginning September 15-17, 2021 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) in Jakarta. During even-numbered years Aquatica Asia will co-locate with a local government show.

Last March, a measure long demanded by NGOs and environmental organizations came into force: the ban on the extraction of red coral in the Mediterranean. Lasting two years, the measure sought to "protect this species and carry out, during this period, a study of its situation," reported the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The Government justified the need to adopt a precautionary approach and the ecosystem approach established in the Common Fisheries Policy, together with the importance of having adequate scientific advice “to adopt management measures that guarantee long-term sustainability of the activity. ”, Says the Ministry.

Attorney Jose Miguel Gana, part of the law firm Gana y Galvez representing Australis, explains the outcomes of the case.

It was reported on Thursday that Australis Seafoods announced that it is pressing charges against Chilean salmon feed manufacturers after the government announced alleged price collusion in 2019.

In December last year, Chile’s competition regulator, the National Economic Prosecutor’s Office (FNE) accused four salmon feed producers of colluding with each other for 12 years to set the price of feed.

Global aquaculture generates around the same amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as the sheep industry but is more efficient, according to new research.

In the first study of its kind, researchers from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, feed manufacturer Cargill and WorldFish found that, in 2017, the fish farming sector generated 0.49% of man-made GHG emissions, or 263 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e).

Grieg Seafood has taken further steps to strengthen its marketing team by recruiting five new faces from other operations and fish farming companies.

The company says it wants a stronger downstream team so it can position itself from being largely a supplier of salmon to a company that can become an innovation partner for selected customers. Kathleen Mathisen HR director at Grieg Seafood said:

‘We are going to need forward leaning people who want to build something new’.
