Other Media | WorldFishing: Oxygen feast for Nova Sea Salmon

NORWAY
Friday, October 30, 2020

Nova Sea has increased the oxygen content in its waiting cages outside its packing facility in Lovund in North Norway after implementing newly developed pump technology.

The six waiting cages are located at the inside of pier, limiting the inflow of oxygen-rich, new seawater. When a wellboat then fills the cages with up to 100,000 salmon the oxygen level in the cages decreases further. Nova Sea contacted PG Flow Solutions who installed its PG-Subflow seawater pump, increasing oxygen content by 20%.

Other Media | iPac.acuicultura: Council and Parliament reach an agreement on the European Fund for Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture 2021-2027

EUROPEAN UNION
Friday, December 04, 2020

The Council has concluded an informal agreement with the European Parliament on how to distribute the budget of € 6.18 billion from the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture (FEMPA) 2021-2027 to maintain and modernize the sector. This has been announced by the Council itself, which highlights that the new FEMPA will particularly support small-scale coastal fishing and promote aquaculture. The negotiated text also aims to simplify the processes to unlock funds and improve results.

"The agreement we have reached is a clear indicator of how we want our future in fishing to be: safe, sustainable, innovative and crisis-proof," said Julia Klöckner, Germany's Minister of Food and Agriculture.

Other Media | Fish Farmer: Salmon prices stall again

NORWAY
Friday, December 04, 2020

The rise in salmon prices which sent a few industry pulses racing just over a week ago seems to have been short-lived, the latest figures from Norway suggest.

Fresh or chilled salmon fell back by 1.9 per cent to NOK 47.67 between week 47 and week 48, which is higher than the 1.3 per cent increase reported by Statistics Norway last month. Prices are now more than 24 per cent than this time last year. However, export levels at 24,964 tonnes in week 48 were slightly up.

The price per kilo of frozen salmon (excluding by products) at NOK 50.44, was 4.4 per cent lower than the week before and 15.7 per cent lower than the same week in 2019. In the period, 496 kilos of frozen salmon were exported. This is an increase of 70.4 per cent from week 47.

Other Media | SeafoodSource: Reaction to COVID-19 relief bill mixed as restaurants close doors

UNITED STATES
Friday, December 04, 2020

Restaurant organizations are reacting both positively and negatively to a new USD 908 billion (EUR 751 billion) COVID-19 relief bill proposed by a group of U.S. legislators.

Due to renewed indoor dining restrictions in several U.S. cities and states, many restaurants are temporarily – or permanently – shutting their doors, and many others are struggling to stay afloat. Seafood suppliers, distributors, and wholesalers are, in turn, taking a hit from the widespread closures.

The congressional proposal, which includes USD 228 billion (EUR 189 billion) for Paycheck Protection Program subsidies focused on small businesses and additional unemployment benefits, is an effort to compromise on an economic stimulus package, which legislators could not agree on before the November election, The Washington Post reported.

IN BRIEF - IFOP will use artificial intelligence to optimize fisheries research

CHILE
Thursday, December 03, 2020

A modern system, based on artificial intelligence and implemented by the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero, has successfully passed its pilot phase and is expected to enter a trial period in 2021.

The pilot system successfully identified and classified more than 80% of commercially important fish images that were entered into the Artificial Intelligence system.

Jorge Cornejo, Doctor in Marine Sciences and project manager, mentioned that “based on this achievement, it is expected to create an automatic fishing registration program. This program will use images obtained during the fishing and unloading operations of the main fisheries in the south central zone of the country. Given the large amount of image information that is obtained in each fishing operation and the number of fishing vessels in Chile, the proposed program helps to improve the analysis and effective use of this information for research. In this way, the pilot program has managed to classify the target species of the fishery, and in the future it is expected to incorporate the classification of the accompanying fauna. This will make it possible to modernize the management of sampling and data collection for fisheries monitoring studies ”.

This Project was carried out for a year, and is part of the performance agreements that IFOP has with the Corporation for the Promotion of Production CORFO. IFOP workers Jorge Cornejo (head of IFOP Talcahuano), Judith Castillo, Guillermo Bendel, Aldo Poblete and Enrique Fernández, external advisor on artificial intelligence, participated in the project.

SPAIN
Thursday, December 03, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has turned the economy of the productive sectors upside down. One of the most affected and harmed groups has been fishing. Hundreds of sailors and shellfishmen had to go out to fish without having any type of protection and with the dismay of seeing that in the first moments of confinement the price of their product fell dramatically. Even so, the Galician fleet remained afloat. After nine months of shocks, La Voz de Galicia organized a discussion forum in the Ribeira fish market to take the pulse of the Galician fishing sector, entitled Weaknesses and strengths in the face of covid-19. Opportunities for improvement in the marketing of seafood.

Other Media | Industrias Pesqueras: European Shipowners celebrate that seafarers are 'essential' for the UN and call for 'pri vaccination

EUROPEAN UNION
Thursday, December 03, 2020

ECSA, the European Community Shipowners' Associations, has celebrated the recent UN resolution, by which seafarers are considered "essential workers" - a demand on the table since last March after the outbreak of the pandemic - and has also supported the request of the International Maritime Organization for a "priority vaccination" to this professional group that encompasses different sectors.

In its opinion, the UN calls on all countries to designate seafarers and other maritime workers as key workers with the aim of implementing the relevant measures to allow seafarers to be repatriated and to facilitate crew changes, in addition to considering the priority vaccination of seafarers.
