Anchovies, sardines, and mackerel numbering in the millions covered the surface of the water at Redondo Beach’s King Harbor. Despite efforts to scoop up the dead fish out of the water, the stench has pervaded. The sudden die-off of the fish is thought to be caused by extremely low levels of oxygen in the water.
Scientists and officials are still investigating what could have brought oxygen levels to nearly zero, but the likely cause is an algal bloom and subsequent decay.
"Basically, they're all over the port area," assistant marina manager Jason McMullin said, adding an incoming tide containing toxins could have brought the fish into the zone.
Although it's not certain yet, the cause might actually be the appearance of an elevated number of algae in the area, if higher concentrations of oxygen in the water can be proven, University of Southern California researchers said.

The Eight Fifty Food Group, the leading multi-protein food group controlled by the private equity firm CapVest Partners LLP announced the acquisition of Hamburg based AliSa International GmbH, trading as Greenland Seafood for an undisclosed figure.
Greenland Seafood is one of mainland Europe’s largest producers of frozen seafood products and employs approximately 600 people across its two manufacturing sites in France and Germany.

Salmon Group, a large network of family-owned fish farming and aquaculture companies that collectively represent 12 percent of the overall production volume in Norway, recently released the report “Fish welfare in fish farming – What is that?" which challenges the commercial salmon-farming industry to aim much higher and be far more closely aligned on issues related to the well-being of these fish throughout their lifecycle. The minimum prices are subject to regulation every week either on the basis of achieved prices or on the basis of minimum prices for nvg herring for flour / oil plus NOK 0.60 per kg. Norway and Russia have reached an agreement for 2021 which provides grounds for optimism in the fishing industry, according to Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Seafood Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen.
‘I am very pleased that we have also for next year been able to reach an agreement that both safeguards the interests of the fishing industry and is sustainable. This is a bright spot in a situation where the corona pandemic also affects the fishing industry,’ he said.

Some 2,000 kg of adult eels and 35,000 young eels have been released into the Desheng River, south China's Guangdong Province, to proliferate the eel breeding population in the natural watercourse.
Eels are a cash species in China. Due to the combined influence of the global climate, environmental challenges and human activities, aquatic resources have decreased sharply worldwide.

Eel farming has been developed in south China's Pearl River Delta. In May, the eel species in Shunde City was included in China's national list of famous and excellent agricultural products.
