IN BRIEF - Cornell becomes first Ivy League university to earn MSC certification

Saturday, July 14, 2012

SEATTLE, (WA) - Cornell University chalks up another first on 13 July by becoming the first Ivy League university to obtain the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) Chain of Custody certification, enabling their on-campus food service operation to serve MSC certified sustainable seafood to its students, faculty, staff, and guests.

The MSC certification is an important element of Cornell’s leadership in the area of sustainability and responsible sourcing for Cornell Dining’s 32 food service locations that serve more than 27,000 customers per day. The university’s commitment to sustainability includes “trayless” dining in select locations, sourcing fair trade coffee served in reusable mugs, biodegradable packaging in grab-and-go items, and even transforming over 515 tons of food scraps and organic waste into compost. Cornell Dining coordinates with the School of Agriculture to harvest more than 50,000 lbs. of potatoes and 1,200 bushels of corn every year from campus farms. Fresh yogurt and ice cream is produced during the school year at the Cornell Dairy.

The MSC certification process included an audit of seafood inventory handling conducted by a third party certifier as well as training of front line staff. MSC’s Chain of Custody verifies that in every step of the supply chain – from the fishers, to the processer, to the distributor, and the customer – MSC certified seafood is not mixed with or substituted for non-certified seafood.

Según denuncia la EUFA, las cuotas de pesca adicionales que la UE ha asignado históricamente a los británicos –para especies de su interés– han supuesto “más de 100 millones de euros anuales en los últimos 10 años para las arcas de Reino Unido”.

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

The secretary general of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (Cepesca), Javier Garat, rejects the proposal for fishing quotas in the Atlantic for 2021, presented by the European Commission (EC), which cuts the catches of several important species for the national fleet.

The head of Cepesca -the employer of shipowners- has reacted against the project of Total Allowable Catches (TAC) and quotas for 2021 in the Atlantic, because it reduces the catches of species such as hake, rooster or Norway lobster in Iberian waters, and sole in the Bay of Biscay.

Other Media | FiskerForum: Door could close on UK distant waters fishing

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

The UK’s distant waters fleet stands to be left out in the cold from the end of this year, and could be cut off from North Atlantic fishing grounds if the UK government does not act quickly to secure access.

As things stand, the only UK fishing company operating in these distant waters, the Hull-based UK Fisheries with its two fishing vessels, currently has no fishing opportunities on its traditional distant waters from 1st of January next year.

‘If we lose our distant waters fishing industry, the irony of the government’s aspiration to become a proudly independent coastal state will not be lost voters of the ‘red wall’ in the north-east of England,’ commented Jane Sandell of UK Fisheries.
