IN BRIEF - H.E. Lisbeth Berg-Hansen Norway Minister of Fisheries to open NASF 2011

Saturday, February 26, 2011

Norway’s Minister of Fisheries Lisbeth Berg-Hansen will open the conference on march 2nd. In her welcoming letter to all delegates, the Minister states the following:

Dear Sir or Madam;

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the 6th annual North Atlantic Seafood Forum in Oslo 1-3 March 2011. This year, there is also a pre-conference seminar on the theme “Science – the basis for the 21st century”.

Environmentally sustainable development is a prerequisite for future growth in the seafood industry. Therefore it is very timely that the conference is addressing the importance of sustainable business development. Sustainable management is no longer a topic of concern solely for governments and the industry – it is also increasingly on the minds of consumers and is thus of great importance to seafood firms.

This conference acts as an important meeting place for the seafood industry, retailers, suppliers and financial institutions. It is important to seek inspiration and gain new knowledge. Covering a wide range of topics, this year’s North Atlantic Seafood Forum has the potential to fulfil both of these objectives.

Therefore I believe that this conference will serve as a needed and valuable meeting place for stakeholders in the seafood industry. Hopefully, it will facilitate discussions on the possibilities and challenges facing future seafood supplies, and to ensure that seafood – both wild caught and aquaculture products – can fulfil its tremendous potential as a reliable provider of protein and other essential nutrients.

I wish you all a successful conference.

Yours sincerely
Lisbeth Berg-Hansen

IN BRIEF - Findus job losses "fewer than expected" for Young's Grimsby factory

Friday, February 25, 2011

Findus Group has said job losses at its Young's Humberstone Road factory in Grimsby are less severe than initially thought after the frozen-food companmy reconfigured product lines and benefited from a rise in sales volumes.

The company had previously warned of the potential loss of up to 84 positions at the site, which manufactures seafood products under the Young's brand.

However, a spokesperson for the group confirmed today (22 February) that this figure has now been cut to 47 voluntary redundancies. Some 28 people, meanwhile, have transferred to new roles within Young's in Grimsby.

"This has been a difficult process for everyone and of course we regret the fact that redundancies have been necessary," Steve Lidgett, operations director for Young’s Seafood Limited, said.

However, he added: "We are confident that 2011 will be a successful year and we are focused on accelerating growth by drawing on our scale, heritage and leadership in fish and seafood."

The company said that it has completed the compulsory 30-day consultation period with staff.
