IN BREIF - Lawmakers Eye Programs For Commercial Fisheries, Disaster Resilience

UNITED STATES
Friday, July 26, 2019

Two disaster-related bills proposed this week in Congress could offer relief for Louisiana communities affected by extreme weather. One would create a permanent safety net program for commercial fishers who have suffered losses due to environmental damage. Another would create a special fund meant to help cities and towns build more resiliently.

Environmental disasters can cause commercial fishers to lose money. This year, for example, Mississippi River flooding has dramatically reduced the catch of several kinds of seafood in both Mississippi and Louisiana.

The Commercial Fishing and Aquaculture Protection Act of 2019, S. 2209, would create a permanent safety net program that would pay commercial fishers for their losses if those losses were caused by environmental conditions.

IN BRIEF - Despite Panelo's optimism, not so many fish in the sea

PHILIPPINES
Wednesday, July 24, 2019

MANILA - Experts have warned that the South China Sea — one of the world’s vital marine ecosystems — is on the edge of a fisheries collapse as it faces serious threats of overfishing.

However, Malacañang on Tuesday ignored this caution, arguing that the resource-rich waters will never run out of fish.

“Aren’t those fishes that were caught suposed to reproduce? Those fishes reproduce every day and the sea is vast,” presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said in response to Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio’s warning that Chinese fishermen could seize “all the fish” if given access to Philippine waters.

IN BRIEF - Prawn aquaculture could provide income – while stopping disease-spreading snails

UNITED STATES
Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Killing up to 200,000 people annually, schistosomiasis is one of the most deadly parasitic diseases in the world, second only to malaria. Soon, however, prawn aquaculture could be used to control the snails that spread it – and to provide revenue for people in developing nations.

Freshwater river prawns are already widely grown as food, starting out in hatcheries and then being transferred to pens in waterways as they mature. Additionally, scientists already know that the crustaceans feed ravenously on the snails which temporarily host the "blood fluke" parasites which cause schistosomiasis.

Recently, an international research project led by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, looked at the relationship between these two factors. More specifically, the scientists wanted to know if local-scale prawn aquaculture could have an appreciable effect on snail populations. What they found was indeed promising.

IN BRIEF - Captain admits throwing illegally caught fish overboard

UNITED STATES
Wednesday, July 24, 2019

GREENVILLE - A fishing captain has pleaded guilty to throwing away fish to prevent the Coast Guard from seizing it.

Federal prosecutors say in a Tuesday news release that 51-year-old William Juel of South Carolina pleaded guilty to disposing of illegally caught fish.

Authorities say the Coast Guard approached his boat and boarded it in November 2017. The release says Coast Guard investigators videotaped Juel throwing fish overboard to prevent them from seizing the catch. Court documents say he was in the jurisdiction of North Carolina-based federal prosecutors.

Prosecutors say the illegal catch included a type of grouper closed to fishing because quotas had been met that year.

IN BRIEF - SSA Mourns the Passing of Founding Director, Former President, and Industry Leader Elaine Knight

UNITED STATES
Monday, July 22, 2019

Seventeen years ago, leaders of the shrimp industry from across the country’s southern coastline came together in response to what they saw as an immediate threat to the continued existence of the commercial fishery.  Volunteering their time, their money, and their reputations, these industry veterans built a national response to the challenges facing shrimpers throughout the South Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.

Miss Elaine was a founding Director of the Southern Shrimp Alliance and served two terms as the President of this organization.  She was also a founding Director and the first President of Wild American Shrimp, Inc., the shrimp industry’s first national marketing initiative.  Miss Elaine served the industry in a broad range of capacities, spending several terms as the Vice-President and Secretary of the Georgia Shrimp Association, acting as part of the National Sea Grant Review Board for two terms while also participating for many years on the National Sea Grant Assessment Team, and serving as a member of the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council for three consecutive terms, two of them as Council Chair.
