Floating cage for Peruvian grunt farming developed

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has built the first circular floating cage made of high density polyethylene for farming marine fish in the bay of Sechura, Piura.
This project was carried out through the National Program of Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture (PNIPA), for productive diversification through the development of Peruvian grunt (Anisotremus scapularis) farming in the sea in the bay of Sechura, Piura.

With a total investment of PEN 643,349 (USD 187,527), the initiative began with 10-gram youth Peruvian grunt, which in less than six months multiplied more than ten times their body weight, thus demonstrating great aquaculture potential.
The benefits of the project highlight not only the social aspects but also the commercial and environmental aspects. In this way, the production of marine fish from a sustainable source begins, whithout contributing to the overfishing of Peruvian coastal ecosystems.

The farming process begins in a hatchery with the adaptation of the Peruvian grunt juveniles, provided by IMARPE, in tanks with recirculation system. Once adapted, the fish are transferred to a floating cage in the sea, where their growth is monitored.

This project was conceived from the beginning with the Association of Artisanal Fishermen and Shellfish Harvesters from the Sea of Sechura, whose members have been trained in workshops and are working directly in activities such as fish feeding, cleaning the systems and guardianship.
It should be noted that PNIPA co-financed the plan in a strategic alliance formed by the company Seacorp Perú SAC, IMARPE, the Association of Artisanal Fishermen and Shellfish Harvesters and Fundación Chile.
