The distance between Japan and San Lorenzo, Valle, is 12 697 kilometers and between Taiwan and Choluteca 14 878 kilometers. However, despite the enormous distance between Honduras and those two countries, Asia has become the main destination of the shrimp that is cultivated and processed in Choluteca and Valle.

Figures from the National Association of Aquaculturers of Honduras (Andah) reveal that last year 22 069 491 pounds were exported to those two countries, from the port of San Lorenzo.

The total exported volume was 56 397 896 during 2019, which means that 39.1% of the Honduran shrimp was sent to Taiwan and Japan. Asia has moved the continents of America and Europe to the second and third place.

Andah statistics indicate that in 2019, 17 864 478 pounds were exported to the Americas, mainly to the United States (6 154 273 pounds) and Mexico (5 250 694 pounds). About 6 459 511 pounds were exported to Central American countries, and 16 443 926 pounds were exported to the European Union (EU).

A report by the National Association of Aquaculturers of Honduras indicates that in 2018 America occupied the first position with 27 019 931 pounds. The European Union followed with 18 828 569 pounds and Asia with 14 125 700 pounds. In 2017, 8 858 143 pounds were exported to that continent. The trend for this year is to maintain growth in exported volume.

Asian market

This region of the world is a desirable market for the global shrimp farming industry. Despite the strong presence of the Chinese product in Taiwan and Japan, the Honduran product has managed to expand its exported volume.

Victor Wilson, president of the Andah, told D&N that the key to entering the Asian market is translated into a single word: "quality."

"Japan is an extraordinarily demanding market," he emphasizes. The product with added value is the one with the most demand in that country and most of the exports are covered by the San Lorenzo Packing Machine of the Grupo Granjas Marinas (GGM), he adds.

In Taiwan, frozen product exports, for the most part, are covered by Empacadora Santa Inés de Choluteca. Andah president highlights that Asia is a long-term market, where there is room to export more shrimp that is cultivated in the southern part of the country.

Expectations

The projections of Honduran farmers are to maintain that growth rate of shrimp exports to the Asian market. The president of Andah argues that greater investments are required to technify production and, therefore, increase their yields on shrimp farms.

He added that businessmen related to this sector analyze some financing options to invest in farms and processing plants. He pointed out that several companies affiliated with the Association have been demanding the government the return of taxes in order to invest in their productive units. Another option may be internal and external financial sources.
