Norway registered the highest export value ever recorded for farmed salmon in February at NOK 2 billion (EUR 160 million). Value has grown by 46 per cent or NOK 636 million (EUR 78.9 million) compared to the same month last year, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC).
“The strength of Norwegian salmon exports is due to a combination of increased demand and reduced competition in the world market for salmon,” explained market analyst Paul Aandahl from NSEC.
The total volume of Norwegian salmon exports in February climbed by 25 per cent to 56,085 tonnes. At the same time, the price of fresh whole Norwegian salmon rose by 19 per cent to NOK 33.67 (EUR 4.17) per kg, a jump of NOK 4.49 (EUR 0.56) on January.
Exports of Norwegian salmon to the European Union (EU) totalled NOK 1.3 billion (EUR 161.2 million) in February, up by 27 per cent compared to the same month in 2009. France is the main importer of salmon in the EU, with a total market value of NOK 273 million (EUR 33.8 million).
Poland is the next biggest export market of salmon with a value of NOK 240 million (EUR 29.8 million). Much of the Norwegian salmon exported to Poland is further processed before being re-exported, primarily to other EU countries.
Exports of Norwegian salmon to Russia in February increased in value by 118 per cent to NOK 181 million (EUR 22.4 million). Russia is Norway’s third biggest salmon market and exports to this country last month made up about 9 per cent of the total value of Norwegian salmon exports.
Norwegian salmon exports to the US in February rocketed in value by NOK 124 million (EUR 15.4 million). This is 238 per cent up on February 2009.
The strongest growth was in fresh Norwegian salmon fillets. The volume of exports hopped from 448 tonnes in February last year to 1,948 tonnes in February 2010.
Frozen Norwegian salmon fillets are also an important product segment in the US market, where the volume of exports increased from 300 tonnes in February 2009 to 771 tonnes in February 2010.
Exports of Norwegian fjord trout in February dipped in value by 6 per cent to NOK 141 million (EUR 17.5 million). The volume of exports was 3,866 tonnes, down 1,400 tonnes compared to the same month last year.
The biggest market for trout is Russia, with an export value of NOK 76 million (EUR 9.4 million). This is 54 per cent of the total export value of trout.
