The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA), Luiz Sérgio; and the president of the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Luciano Coutinho, have agreed on the need to enhance the fishery activity and to add higher value to the resources obtained.
Both officials have talked about the benefits that fishing has on the economy, job creation and deficit reduction of fish in the trade balance.
According to Agencia Brasil, the Bank social sphere is planning to agree with the MPA on the performance of a series of measures to promote aquaculture and the training of the workforce.
The main objective is "to qualify the activity so as to add value to those who are producing [the fishermen] and to discuss how to include these products in a larger chain, mainly in the distribution and marketing of fish," said the Minister of Fisheries.
He also stressed that for BNDES, the development of the fisheries sector is one of the "opportunities" that Brazil has and it needs to be developed.
"We’re going to position the fish as a representative item of the Brazilian economy, a similar position that at present poultry, cattle and agriculture have," said Sérgio.
After conducting several meetings, the Bank will consider creating a special line of credit to the fisheries sector.
"There's a predisposition," said the minister.
BNDES also expressed interest in supporting the studies performed by MPA to establish a national policy on fisheries and aquaculture.
