Comsur Ltd salmon processing plant, belonging to Trusal S.A. Company, was granted the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification from the Global Alliance for Aquaculture (GAA).
The factory, located in Puerto Montt in the Region of Los Lagos, has a daily production capacity of 120 tonnes of salmon and employs about 850 workers during peak season.
"Comsur ranked as one of the first plants at national and international level to obtain this integral accreditation that considers food security, environment, social responsibility, labour relations, animal welfare and traceability for aquaculture facilities", said Comsur general manager Rodrigo Matus, according to Aqua.
"By meeting the BAP standards, we are reaffirming our ongoing commitment in striving to improve our operations, adding value to our products in foreign markets and, incidentally, ensuring compliance with standards, which are highly evaluated today by the major customers that we have", he added,
The BAP standards define the most important elements regarding the responsibility for aquaculture and set guidelines according to which good practices are evaluated.
"Currently, it is the only processing plant for the salmon farming category with facilities designed to develop their products continuously, generating a non-stop lay-out from incoming raw material to storage", Matus said.
This enables better product performance and a high quality standard to meet the demanding markets such as fresh product consumption.
The executive also thanked "the invaluable assistance received from the company Adolfo Alvial Consulting during the process that culminated in the achievement of the BAP certification standard."
Trusal is a leading aquaculture company in Chile and is among the top 15 companies in the world.
Trusal breeds and fattens Atlantic salmon, trout, coho and chinook salmon. It covers the entire production chain, from egg generation to processed product export.
Since early 2012, two salmon plants were granted BAP certification: Mainstream Chile and Multiexport Foods S.A.
