A seafood firm from Ceará uses viscera of tilapia to produce fish oil rich in omega-6, which is useful to produce feed for poultry and livestock.
According to the Business Director of the company Piscis, André Siqueira, about 25 tonnes of viscera of tilapia are collected per month among producers from Castanhão region (Ceará) and about 10 tonnes of fish oil are obtained.
Currently, this state is the largest producer of tilapia in the country and fish discards are a major issue for local producers.
Thanks to the initiative of Piscis, fish entrails collection, transportation and processing systems were created, which directly benefits the environment and fish farmers in the region. Besides "businesses are created where none existed before," said the entrepreneur.
Furthermore, he highlighted the food obtained for poultry and for cattle is different from the rest because of the omega-6 oil contained in its composition.
The consumer market for tilapia of this company is made up of feed mills and poultry and livestock farms located in Fortaleza.
The Business Director stressed that Pisces is supported by several funding and promotion agencies, such as the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP), through the Prime programme; Scientific and Technological Development Support Foundation in Ceará (Funcap), with the Technology Innovation Fund (FIT); Centec Institute; the Bank of Northeast from Brazil (BNB); and the Institute Euvaldo Lodi (IEL), through the Exchange Programme.
The company is supported by Funcap with ‘Integrated use of tilapia processing waste: animal oil, protein concentrate and/or organic compound’ project.
Pisces is known throughout the country due to the innovative work it develops. Last year, it was awarded the National Award for Innovation by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) in the category of Sustainable Development, Small and Medium Enterprises.
In addition, in 2011 Pisces was presented as a highlighted case during the XI Conference of the National Association for Research and Development of Innovative Companies (Anpei), held in Fortaleza, reported Funcap.
