A fruitful bilateral meeting was held by the Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs of Norway, Lisbeth Berg-Hansen, and the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Pablo Galilea, during the participation of the Chilean delegation at Aqua Nor 2013 international fair, which is taking place until 16 August in Trondheim, Norway.
In the meeting, the two officials agreed on a collaboration project that, in the short term, will make it possible to implement a training programme as well as training on emerging diseases in salmon farming, directed to officials of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), of the Undersecretariat for Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) and of laboratories of the diagnostic network of Sernapesca.
"We are very pleased with the agreements reached, among which the development of a plan to exchange scientific and technical information on topics of interest to both countries is highlighted. For Chile, it is important to have updated information on emerging diseases, zoning strategies, caligus load capacity and control," explained the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Pablo Galilea.
The Norwegian Minister stressed that both countries have similarities. "We are world leaders and we share the same actors, so being able to have a close discussion and cooperation in various fields allows us to continue promoting sustainable aquaculture," she said.
The Norwegian official explained that this year 45 new aquaculture concession licenses were subjected to bidding, giving priority to companies that have implemented environmental solutions for salmon farming, especially those to address problems such as the presence of sea lice or caligus or fish escapes from farming cages.
On behalf of the Chilean delegation the meeting was attended by Alicia Gallardo, head of the animal health unit of Sernapesca and José Miguel Burgos, chief of the aquaculture division of Subpesca.
Under Aqua Nor, on Thursday 15 August the seminar "Chile - Norway: emerging diseases, learning from our experiences" will be conducted jointly by the fisheries authorities of both countries.
