In the last 12 years, tuna processing has increased from 700 to 40,000 tons of raw material, according to the Peruvian Tuna Chamber (CPA); that is, it had a 5600% increase.

The fisheries association said that in that period the sector experienced a growth of 13 600% and currently reports USD 123 million annually in sales.

In addition, it highlighted that the Peruvian tuna industry is one of the most dynamic in the world, in the frameworkd of the Tuna 2020 Conference, in Panama.

According to CPA President Alfonso Miranda this development was the result of an investment of USD 200 million from the business sector.

However, he warned that a "change of rules" by the Sunat would put the industry at risk.

Miranda said that he hopes that "the President of the Council of Ministers will order the Sunat not to alter the game rules that they have been working with for more than 12 years and that have been fruitful."

The union recalled that in 2007 Law 28965 was promulgated, which allows foreign vessels with fishing permits granted by Peru to land their tuna catches in the country, and that this product enters according to the current customs regimes.

However, he noted that Sunat intends that the catches  of foreign vessels be considered national and subject to a 30% tax on the total value of the invoice for raw material.
