The directors and researchers of the Austral Centre of Scientific Investigation (CADIC), from Argentina, and of the Institute of Fishery Development (IFOP), met last month in the town of Ushuaia, Argentina, in order to identify scientific-technical research areas to project a collaborative work in austral marine ecosystems.

►The directors of the Austral Center for Scientific Research (CADIC), Gustavo Ferreyra, and the Institute of Fisheries Promotion (IFOP), Luis Parot, together with researchers Gustavo Lovrich, Federico Tapella and Irene Schloss, of CADIC, and Eduardo Almonacid and Erik Daza, of IFOP.

Since the end of 2016, both institutions have strengthened ties that they hope to formalize by signing an agreement during the first semester of 2019.

CADIC director Gustavo Ferreyra explained that that "this work model is in line with the policies of bilateral approach in basic and applied scientific research that both countries are currently developing".

In the particular case of the Beagle Channel, he stressed that "initiatives such as this one are fundamental for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable exploitation of marine and land living resources."

For his part, IFOP director Luis Parot said: "Scientific research on the resources we share is essential to understand their behaviour, protecting them ensures their sustainable exploitation. This first step opens up enormous possibilities of joint work in the Austral and Antarctic Zone."
