VASEP reports that, during the first half of September 2019, the total value of pangasius exports to Mexico market reached 67.6 million USD, up 6% over the same period last year. In the first 9 months of this year, only in the first quarter of 2019, Pangasius exports to this market grew well but from April to September 2019, the export value to this market was not stable and decreased compared to in the same period last year.

So far, about 20 Vietnamese enterprises have exported Pangasius to Mexico market. In particular, focusing on the provinces of Dong Thap, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Ben Tre. 100% of Pangasius products are exported to Mexico in frozen form and cut into frozen segments (under HS 030462).

Three years ago, Pangasius export value to Mexico increased positively. This market is assessed as a potential export market for Vietnamese pangasius export enterprises. However, in the past 2 years, Pangasius export to this market has not been as expected, the average export price of Pangasius to Mexico market is from 1.25 - 3.15 USD / kg. This export price is lower than many major export markets.

According to the latest statistics of ITC, in 2018, frozen pangasius (HS code 030462) and frozen tilapia (HS code 030461) were the two products with the highest import value in the import structure of white meat fish products of Mexico, however, frozen Chinese tilapia fill up to more than 60% of the total import of Mexican whitefish.

Mexico generates 25 percent of Tilapia's production in Latin America: CONAPESCA

In recent years, besides importing tilapia from China, the country is also strongly increasing tilapia farming activities in this country. Estimates, tilapia production of Mexico accounted for 25% of total production of the entire Latin American region. The prolonged US-China trade war also created favorable conditions for Mexico to increase the export of white meat fish to the US. However, so far, Mexico has remained stable importing rather than increasing imports of white meat fish from some Asian sources.

Forecasting, from now until the end of the year, Pangasius export value to Mexico will continue to stay at the same level as the two quarters in the middle of the year, the average import price will not increase higher in the end of the year.
