Good activity in NVG herring, less mackerel and increased capelin tip

Capelin

The current TAC for capelin is 61 000 tonnes, and Norway's share in this has not yet been determined. But according to our calculations, Norway's share is 3,050 tonnes (5%), in addition to the 2020/2021 legal gap component of 25,642 tonnes. Norway also has an agreement with the EU for up to 10,000 tonnes if there is a quota base for it. The Directorate of Fisheries closely follows developments and we hope that the amounts that we can calculate so far will be a sufficient basis to establish a regulation.

The Icelandic exploration group vessels will embark on a new cruise earlier this week, where the hope is to cover the areas east, north and west of Iceland, and that there will be a quota update after this cruise at the end of the week.

Herring NVG

This week, 22,485 tonnes of NVG herring have been reported, most of which has been taken north and northwest of Andenes. There were several boats searching for bigger herring further out in the Norwegian Sea and at Smutthullet, but feedback from here is that there is little to see and herring is hard to come by. Thus, there were four 850-ton records from here.

Bad weather towards the end of the week briefly halted fishing, but overnight activity recovered and we had 7,530 tonnes to auction on Sunday. Most of the fleet is now north of Andenes, where good fishing is reported. There have been boats searching for herring further afield in the Norwegian Sea west of Værøy, but so far there have been no good results to report from this area.

Mackerel

Nine foreign vessels have delivered a total of 11,780 tonnes of mackerel to the Norwegian reception this week, catches have ranged from 620 to 2,200 tonnes. Everything is fished in the sea to the northwest of Scotland.
